Replacing the head gasket on my Blazer and nothing left but to remove the head, its on the driver side and I cannot get to the bottom row of bolts. I have the exhaust manifold loose but the steering column is in the way. If I remove the motor mount on that side and jack it up will that give me enough room? I dont see anyway to get the exhaust manifold out if I unhook it at the exhaust pipe?

Help :help:

Its a 4.3, 120,000 miles. I got a timing chain but have not gotten to look at that part yet. Any info would be great I was wondering about valve clearance etc when it goes back together.

Cant edit my last post but I just wanted to add that the truck otherwise is in A-1 shape and has been very well taken care of I just wanted to fix it right. My last Blazer ran till the doors fell off so I was hoping to get the same out of this one. Do you have any suggestions to get to the lower head bolts?

I added you to Xfire so give me a shout I will be back and forth as doing some things around the house.

yep I had no problems on my old 86 astro 4.3 taking heads off I think its a bit tighter then S 10 .only reason I took my heads off is I thought I had a head gasket leaking but it was a cracked # 2 cylinder . $300 .00 I put a used engine in it . got 750,000 kilometres ( i think that works out to 450,000 miles ) out of it before body gave out on it .If I would of flushed the block on a regular basis #2 cyl would not have cracked . it got blocked in water passage over time. Buds right they last forever and thats why I bought 2 more astros the 4.3 engines are tough .

the proper way to do this job is to raise the motor a bit with a cherry picker or come along

but if that wasn't the way you did it you will have to use a universal , but the good and easy

part is manifold bolts don't need a torque quarter turn after snug is all that's required , you

will need two people one top and one bottom , here's a trick that I have oftened used wrap

a little electrical tape around the universal so its not so loose and sloppy , and if needed

put a little butyl inside the socket (butyl is windshield gasket material) black and super sticky

you can even use pneumatics quarter turn after snug is what a pneumatic will do , and for

the future if you are planning to keep a vehicle whenever you do work on it always use

anti-seize lubricant , its made by permatex one brand and its really graphite creme and

is for everything head bolts manifold bolts any nut threads or bolts on your vehicle and

beware its like mustard you can't fucking use it without getting it everywhere , here's

another tip if you don't have a cherry picker or overhead hoist , jack up the vehicle

place soft material on stern part of the oil pan disconnect the motor mount on the

side you are working on then lower the jack the motor will rise about 10 inches

which should be ample for your task .

I hope this was helpful Aloha David

Why dont you just take the steering column loose? Take the bolts out . Make sure the wheel is straight take it loose from the gear, drop it down and lock the steering wheel with a bungee so it doesn't turn-otherwise you will screw up the clockspring. STILL A SUCK ASS JOB!!

to simply answer your question you have to pull the mount bolts raise the engine a few inches to get the manifold off or remove the steering shaft like has been mentioned here

Contact me about it, my dad is a mechanic and he has worked on a S10/Sonoma and Blazer/Jimmy. If you are still working on it and have some questions, like I said, contact me and ask my dad for some help.
