I Know What I Suspect, But Would Appreciate Help...

2006 Buick LaCrosse, V6, 12v, 3.8L, OHV.

 

While driving, at any speed, on the highway, or taking corners...the engine simply shuts off. No check engine light, no error code stored. It does display the engine light (NOT the check engine light...it's an outline of the engine), the traction control light, and the engine decreased power light (same as the engine outline light, but with a downward facing arrow). No sounds, not chiming...nothing. It simply shuts off. We coast to the side of the road if possible. Put the transmission into park and wait, never more than 2 minutes, and after trying to start it again a few times, it starts right back up and we are on our way for either 3 more minutes or up to 30 more minutes. The only thing to note is that when we try to start it back up after this happens, but before it will restart, the engine does...nothing. No starter, no clicking, no sounds, nothing. The car has 100% power. Radio, AC, windows, seats....all of it. Last thing. When the engine dies, there is no warning. It doesn't sputter to death, no lights come on prior...it's like driving your car and simply turning it off. However, the first start once it will start back up, can be, but isn't always, a hard start.

 

Thanks for any and all responses in advance. You want a new computer, or your PC fixed, I'm your guy. Got a problem with your car...fuck if I know.

my step son has a 2006 monte carlo and he had the same prolem.Sometimes it would start right up and then other times it would'nt do anything.Sometimes it would run and just die like your speaking of but usually before he even got it into to drive.All his was was a bad positive clamp on the battery.replaced it and never had the problem again.Hopefully your solution is that simple.

Please confirm.

 

Did your Son STILL have power to the radio, AC, and windows? I called GM, which in turn called a dealership...they said check the battery cables (although I can't be sure they had all the details).

 

I DO hope it's this simple...but is it even possible to have power to EVRYTHING else and have a bad battery cable.

 

Additonally, I must be completely ignorant of how cars work...because outside of the "luxury" items, I was under the impression that the battery was needed for nothing more than the ignigtion and starter, and once started, you could basically throw the thing out...and the car would still run. For example, when you get a jump...as long as you get the car started, it doesn't matter how low the battery is...BECAUSE the engine is keeping itself going, independant of the battery.

 

IF this is true...why would a battery cable (or a bad one at that) be the culprit when an engine just dies.

 

Again, I do appreciate all the responses. I really need to get this figured out. Just bought it. 3 years left to pay on it, and no warranty.

Any reason why that wouldn't register an error code or OnStar not pick it up with a diagnostics test?

Sounds like bad ground to me too....had similar problem with a rodeo nd turned out bad ground at starter....go over all ur grounds masybe even take off nd clean then reattach

Yes, there are several modules on this car that will shut it down .........as I said check for codes in ALL the modules

Bad ground, or bad connection somewhere. Yes it's possible to power things, but it may not be fully powered even though it seems to be working.

Maybe try to notice if when the vehicle dies if you just hit a rough spot in the road, or offset incline, anything that would wiggle the wires, or stretch them a little.

Have seen things in wiring that will make you pull your hair out for days until you finally spot the culprit, then it makes poerfect sense.

engine may experience

engine stall accompanied

by instrument gauges

dropping to zero. The

speedometer and

tachometer may continue

to operate normally at

this time. In addition,

the low fuel indicator

light may come on.

The condition is caused by intermittent high resistance between

the negative battery cable and the right side frame rail. To

repair, remove the cable, clean the surfaces of any corrosion

and apply a coating of dielectric grease. The TSB states that it

is EXTREMELY important that you use a torque wrench when

retightening this cable. The spec is 89-106 INCH lbs.

GM is also recommending a PCM software update. Consult TSB

05-06-037 for details on the software update.

It was the PCM.

 

As the car was under 8 years old and under 80K miles...everything but the insurance for the rental car was covered by warranty.

I hope that cures your problem I was a GM tech at dealership for 21 years and in the later years didn't see many pcm failures.If it acts up again which I hope it doesnt it is very possible that the connections in the underhood electrical center are loose or the terminals themselves have a loose pin fit I would seperate it and look for any areas that look like they have been hot and also take a good look at all the female terminals to see if any look like they are open more than the others.

omg had a mystery stall like this one 2 months ago.turned out pcm got wet from rain teck drilled hole in bottom of pcm and water came out and it worked fine after we dried it out,insulated seal above pcm /windshield and now it also has a drain incase moisture returns...weird shit happens.

lol i had the problem happen to me too... my solution ended up being getting new terminals for the battery cables
