so last weekend my car was making a wierd whining noise when i was pressing on the accel... whenever i took my foot off accel it would stop only to start again when i put my foot back down. that same weekend my car decided that it did not want to go into any gear unless i gave it gas. i have 2004 mitsubishi endeavor awd. the shop that currently has it seem like they are confused. they checked the transmission since it was on warranty through them and everything was good including the gear train and torque converter. what could be causing the whining noise?

differential and carrier bearings are very common in most endeavors. 04-06 is it a humming bearing noise?

What you are going to need to do is have them elevate the vehicle again, but with someone inside the truck to 'drive' it while it is in the air. Being an AWD model this makes like very easy for finding rotating noise like you have since all four wheels will rotate in the air.

With the vehicle elevated and a helper driving the vehicle at least 30mph so it is into the noise range, they are going to need to take a stethoscope to confirm the failure point. Stethoscopes are very cheap and they should not be without one anyway. If you/they need to pick up one, they can be had usually for under $10.

They will want to start by probing the rear wheel spindles right up against where the axle goes in to the back side of it. This is the housing that the bearing is stored inside. Compare left to right and front to rear; if you are in the speed range when the noise occurs, the stethoscope will make it abundantly clear as there will be lots of noise in your ears... it should be dead silent.

If the bearings all check out silent, you would then need to move to the differential and the carrier bearing (in case you got a new bad one). Realistically though you will probably be dealing with 1 or 2 rear wheel bearings, they are extremely common on the Endeavor, specifically 04-06 models.

Regardless, it will be very clear the issue once the stethoscope is used; the only noise that you will hear at driving speed like you describe and not be heard when elevated is tire noise (cupping, scalloped tires), however since you have new tires this certainly won't be the case.

If you find the rear bearing(s) are an issue, they take about 20 minutes each to change as they are complete hub assemblies, no pressing required. The bearings run about $200 each.

I'd bet my last doughnut its failed clutch pack in trans is the issue, i tak it to another dealer for they are giving you the gears

use a white tissue and pull trans dipstick wipe with tissue check for grit and smell the fluid...does smell burnt? also colour pink or brown on tissue

thrust bearings between planetary gearsets can cause this noise as other said diff but it won't make you press hard on pedal to move car

if need to press hard on pedal indcates low fluid or slipping clutch or torque converter stator failed

sorry ..looks like you have maybe 2 issues.the trans because you also said it wouldnt shift into gear which sounds like tyhat is now fixed .If the whining is not related to trans then perhaps a problem in the differential which is common on 04-06 endeavors.a good tech with a stethascope underneath the vehicle should be able to find the noise while its in gear on the rack with someone inside pushing on accelerator-and if its in that area then take apart to inspect bearings and gears..that shop really must stop wasting time and locate that noise...

Im sorry you have to have us guessing about a noise that should have been found within a 45 minute testdrive and rack check out -when you did the right thing by bringing your car to a so called professional mechanich to be worked on...gl

ya its annoying... i think im just gonna take it back from them. they followed the warranty and did the work on the trans so thats fixed... im going to take it to a friend and see if he can figure it out ill be posting a video on here as well with a recording so you can hear the sound and it will have the guages on it too so you can see speed and see the rpm change as a take my foot off the gas. hopefully its not what the shop is saying it is... my father and i have never heard of a trans case going bad in a car that new and that is what they are saying it is. annoying the crap out of me. ><

i missed that you have a manual or automatic trans with tansfer case thats auto or manual ?

if transfer case failure is due to using gear oil in the winter

best use automatic transmission fluid for transfer case due to cold months oil doesn't flow well and becomes toffe

I just rebuilt my 04 endeavors transmission (I'm a shade-tree mechanic). If you're reading this because of recent trans problems it is probably too late. The F4A51 trans (and it's variants) are put in chrysler' date=' hyundai, and mitsubishi cars. The "wave spring" next to the overdrive/reverse clutch drum is to thin and weak and breaks. Large pieces of this spring fall into the oil pan and are sucked up past the faulty trans filter and lodge in the oil pump. This eventually breaks the large thick gear in the oilpump. Once that happens it's a trans rebuild. The good news is if your trans has been slipping and a little funny it might not be to late. The wave spring and filter can be accessed through the back cover. The replacement wave spring (from the dealer) is 4 times as thick. Replace the filter with a aftermarket filter. You might be lucky enough to not need the rebuild.

There is NO TSB or recall on this.

Look around on the web for pics of the wave spring, and broken oil pump gear.

It cost me $350 in parts (A rebuild kit, clutch pack, oil pump gears and body and a new filter) and 6 days in labor (spread over 2 weeks). The only dealer part I used was the replacement wave spring ($28.71).[/quote']

its kinda a bearing noise i hear but can also be drive chain in transfer case rubbing case

best thing to do is jack and block vechicle off all 4 wheels enough to crawl under with a wooden broom stick handle to use as stethoscope and check where is the sound coming from

Sorry, coming in late and too lazy to read up on the thread.

I think the OBD has transmission stats in it, presumably that includes transaxle info. Have you checked for any OBD errors? Not all trip the Check Engine light.

no errors at all... shop said that if they replace the transfer case and it doesnt fix the problems the repairs done after that to find and fix are free... thinking about just going with that... pay for only the part and have a guarantee... they wont charge labor
