When I start the game, it hangs at the screen that simply says "Setting up game..." in white letters on a black background.

It hangs so bad, even Task Manager cannot kill the program.  I literally have to restart the computer.

This is getting frustrating as hell.  My ability to actually get into the game now stands at about 8 0-NO/20-YES.  Why I have been able to get in sometimes is a mystery to me.

Is ANYONE Else having this problem?

I've been wondering if it's a COD5 master server problem, a PunkBuster problem, or if it's a local problem on my computer.  It all started when I changed ISPs from my local telco DSL to Charter cable Internet.  But everything else on the Internet is fine, so I'm hard-pressed to point the finger at Charter.  If anything, I think it's just plain coincidence that it started happening right when I made the ISP switch, and I have been able to play since making the switch, but again, it's  8 0-NO/20-YES at best.

I would have to go with your isp causing the issue. I wonder if it blocks port 28960 for some reason ? Might also be the router they gave you I'm sure they did change that. There use to be a command you could add to your target line from the properties tab on your shortcut. Just do not remember it right now. Thats all I can think of for right now. If it would be the master server it would time out and give the error can not connect to online whatever so its not them. Quite sure its not PB.

Wasn't there something about setting up your router called port forwarding? I don't know I just remember someone saying something about that.

Hope it don't have anything to do with your recent Blue Screens of Death you been getting since you installed BF4 m8.

Hmmm never had that one but I keep getting the one that says, "This server for low ping players only!"  Drives me nuts but as we all know I don't have far to go anyway! I still manage to get on eventually!

Try this...

Copy and paste it into the command line on your shortcut. Make sure there is a space after the (") that finishes the shortcut that is already there.

+set net_port 28960

This got my game to start working after a lot of swearing trying to make it go.

Thats the one TY Artimus Prime How you  do it is right click on the WAW icon you use to launch the game and select properties. Under the shortcut tab look for the Target line it should look like this

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Activision\Call of Duty - World at War\CoDWaWmp.exe"

now add what Artimus mentioned and it will look like this

 "C:\Program Files (x86)\Activision\Call of Duty - World at War\CoDWaWmp.exe" +set net_port 28960

If that does not work you will have to call your ISP and tell them to open up your router. Cable companies are bad for locking there stuff down and making you call to have it opened up. In Canada Rogers by default does not let you network on there router unless you ask them to unlock that feature. Yet we give them our money. Hell I can't even get a monthly bill via email from my ISP.

Charter is my provider and I've never seen that. Mine does crash between map downloads sometimes, but that's just since I started using Windows7. Doesn't lock up, just errors out, restart game and map then loads.

Good to know.  I'll give that a try, but a port scan shows port 28960 closed and the Charter boys and girls seem to be having a hard time wrestling the modem into submission.  They are on their way to replace it as I type...

Yes, Beers - exactly.  But for whatever reason, the boys n' girls at Charter are having a bit of a problem getting port forward settings to stick in the modem.  They are on the way to replace it.  I'm doubtful that will help, though.

Don't think so, SOB.  What I'm hearing on that front is that I may be under-volting my CPU at its present level of overclock.  I might have to drop down in speed and jack up the CPU voltage just a tad and see if it starts behaving.  That game apparently stresses the shit out of the CPU and the GPU.

They claim, because I have a static IP, that all ports are open, but that's just a lie and I've called them out on it.  AND they are having a bitch of a time setting up port forwards in the modem, so they are on their way over here to replace it.  I doubt that is going to fix it.

I think a router of my own to put behind their modem is in my future.

I'm on a Business account with Charter.  The modem they dropped in here is a Ubee Model DDW365.  I suspect it's quite different on the residential side.

I think everyone gets those other crashed between maps, and especially if you downloaded the previous map, but this thing going on with me is something else.  It hangs "setting up game..." so hard a restart is required to kick it out of memory.  I think it really is port 28960 being closed that's blocking the game.

My OP is too old to be relevant, KillingTime.  You should start a new post if you continue to have problems.

However, from my end, all COD5 servers have been up this weekend (3/22 & 3/23)

Server status is on the front page of the website.

I cant get in either. I get a quick server list and go to refresh and it goes blank. But whats weird about it is sometime Ive been able to actually join a game if I don't refresh favorite or server list. Never had this problem before. Now the only change Ive done is using a 144hz monitor. Its been like this for two weeks. This isn't one of my steam games either. Just a plain old disc in drive. I thought it might be weather related on the east coast. But I don't know.
