Ill just leave this here.  This doesn't have to be done with XI or any XI servers.  Enough of us are interested to even get it going on our own if need be.  Of course I would like to run it by XI and see what members would be interested in helping.

Or more importantly what your thoughts are?  Keep in mind any games instructions are always confusing at first.  Heck, think about when you learned how to play Chess.

If you have never played Risk, Warhammer, DnD, or Axis and Allies this probably will not sound appealing to you.  It's something I have been thinking about for the last 2 years or so.

I will also post this in XI Members Input or Discussion, but your guys opinions are the first that interest me.  Eventually I will branch out into Battlelog, Reddit, NFO forums, etc to try and get the help needed to make this happen.  Possibly create a website, look for someone to do graphics, or even an instructional video.

I wont say anything about it right now until/unless people are actually interested.

For now, just read and think about how awesome this would be.

Sounds like Axis And Allies. I'll look over it when I have time and give you my feedback.

I've been table top gaming for over 25 years, and have created a RPG game system from scratch.

Sounds interesting cool rules. I'd wanna play.

I'm currently working on "War Darts".. simple enough game. Basically big map on the wall. Throw darts at various cities depending on if you are playing for axis or allies. darts are gonna have countries flag. get more points hitting populated areas. you are gonna be able to "occupy" cities if you ge t bullseye on the city, which will give you bullseye points, and if its a capital city you get an additional dart. The opposing player can also oust the occupying force by hitting a bullseye on their own city.

I'm still coming up with more details and rules, but thats the gist so far.

by the way you know about this game right?

Red Orchestra does the same ie progressing through a series of maps with the most dominant team voting if they want to attack or defend on the next map that is also voted on from a sub menu which shows all the territory available, each territory has a group of maps that can be voted for and as i said the winners gain more replacement points for the next map, so if you keep losing it just gets harder and harder but team work can turn it around, this game does not have the same graphics as BF4 etc but for me it is the most realistic fps war game around,  i love it, it really feels like you are involved in something more then just run n gun to serve your own ends,  might be hard to get people to think differently from the norm though, but i think it is a good idea for BF4.

I'd be up for this.

I would also do a limit on classes within squads or a pool for the entire team to decide on to make people really think about their force composition.

eg

if it is based on maximum in squads (if squads are set at 5 and all must be filled so no 10 squads of 2 or something stupid)

Assault 5

Support 2

Engineer 2

Spec ops (sniper class but cannot use actual sniper rifles) 2

Sniper 1

if it is based on maximum in team

Assault 32

Support 18

Engineer 18

Spec ops (sniper class but cannot use actual sniper rifles) 18

Sniper 6

I saw that game mouse, lol.  Id be interested to pick up a copy just for ideas.  And your dart game sounds pretty fun, cause i could drink at the same time.

Red Orchestra was a great game.  I know getting the first few games going would be the toughest.  Right now a site called http://global-conflict.org/whatisgc.php has been doing something similar to this since BF1942.  I ran a few rounds with them in BF3 and it was the most fun I ever had.   You have to make the server unranked though cause stats get all fucked up.

The first round my job was to Javelin any helicopter from the top of the construction site on Gulf of Oman.

I went 272-2

The next round my job was to repair a tank that was on the front lines.

I went 7-143

So as you can see the stats can be crazy.

Interesting and confusing lol. I'll have to read more when I'm off.

Yes and yes.  UNO is also confusing if you have never played it before :)

and yes. let me know your thoughts.

I'd be up for this.

if it is based on maximum in team

Assault 32

Support 18

Engineer 18

Spec ops (sniper class but cannot use actual sniper rifles) 18

Sniper 6

this is an interesting consideration.  when i played this in BF3 (4 man squads) my first squad was:

Recon - for fast re-deploy but more importantly target designation

Engineer x 2 - Me (javelin to take out designated targets)

Support - Resupply

Second round was:

Recon

Engineer

Support

Assault

as we were front lines and needed the rez's

Limiting the number of each class could be interested.  However, right now I would probably leave it up to the Captains or higher ranks.  Thanks though.  This is the feedback we are looking for.

Btw - shout out to @ and @@Freefry Freeburg for helping make my idea come to fruition.

Might wanna try target to pick up that game. It was on clearance last time I was there.

Plus if you like board games Target has started carrying Fantasy Flight Games, and they have a partnership with Wil Wheaton and carry all games that air on his show "Tabletop".

I remember when you mentioned this in TS.  Adds scale to the game.  Very interesting.  Personally (only speaking for myself).  I don't know that it would affect how I play or anything.  I'd probably play the same.  It would be fun to see how the map turns out after a month though.  I would probably keep tabs on it.

Intriguing.

It reminds me of the multiplayer map for Shogun 2 Total War, if anyone played the multiplayer.  Your clan could 'capture' territories on the physical campaign map by winning your individual multiplayer battles.

The list of rules makes it seem a bit intimidating, but the majority of the people playing wouldn't need to know the rules to participate.  Anyone could join without any prep reading and pick up the structure as we go.

To summarize the game: Two generals draft for control of the 8 regions to start, then troops are distributed and the first commander attacks two regions and the attack outcome is decided based on how the rounds turn out.   Afterwards, the generals can converse with their team about where to put the troops, then the other side gets two attacks, and so on back and forth.

That's all you really need to know about the game to play unless you're one of the two generals.  Odd, FMBill and I worked together on the rules and map, so feel free to ask us questions or to clarify rules.  They're still flexible.

Target and Fantasy Flight games are both headquartered in the Minneapolis area, so it makes sense that they would partner up.  Fantasy flight has a ton of good games.  Do you know which games Target will sell?

This wouldn't really change the way we play, EXCEPT that hopefully everyone would be in teamspeak tactical channels we would be more organized as a team.  People could play certain roles and hold certain areas more strictly than in our normal conquest games.

Maybe we should look to Shogun 2 for how they structure things.  I started playing that game, but it seemed extremely complicated.

I think it varies store to store, but at my local target I've seen the x-wing minature game, elder sign, game of thrones board game, Deadwood. Also they carry other good games like Pandemic, and Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride. Like I said Wil Wheaton's show has (had I am not sure if they still do ) a deal with his webshow on geek and sundry called "tabletop" where him and usually a couple guest celebs play a board game.... I picked up Elder Sign and Pandemic last year for half off when they went on sale.

Looks cool Odd, I think some of the tweaks suggested would work out nicely. I'll keep track of it, I'm not entirely sure I'd play it yet :P.

Exactly.  Any of the Total War games are fun where you had to play the map, then play out a real battle.

The interesting thing is everyone would end up playing a bit different.  Its not set up that you are just free to roam around playing like normal.  It could that your job for that match is strictly to laser designate targets, or to strictly be a LAV driver.  Now any person in their right mind would know who is good at what, and try to do as much as they could to put people like you Sid, in the front lines on the ground, or people like Damit in the chopper.  But ultimately there would be times where your job for that match is something totally different.

I forgot to add this part to the explanation of the game.

This is the cool part.  In Teamspeak you can set up "Whisper Lists"  So the Commander/General can talk to only his two Colonels, who can hear their Captains and the Commander/General.  The Captains then set up a Whisper List so they can only hear the Colonels and their squad.  This allows you to talk to people in multiple channels.  It makes it so that there is a chain of command.  Commands come down the chain and are then handed out live, in the middle of battle.  This isnt just a free for all.

Perhaps we could get enough people to sign up for even a simple 12 vs 12 mock battle, so you guys get the idea.

I just read through all the rules. It sounds very interesting.

It reminds me of company of heroes

- If you haven't played company of heroes its an rts, but a bit more strategic than most.

- its one big map but you can control different sectors of the maps by occupying buildings with your troops.

-depending on what sectors you occupy with your troops you get various perks

mixed with red orchestra

- as mentioned earlier Red Orchestra has a similar mechanic for the map picking depending on who wins

mixed with battlefield

-obviously

mixed with old school table top wargames/risk/axis and allies.

- i've actually played a table top wargame with very very similar game mechanics as the general position. i cant recall which one.

Overall the rules sound good. Glad you posted them here. I would actually be interested on trying out the General Position.

Sign me up. what time? I'd even be interested in trying out general for a bit. will we have the ability to switch around positions between maps to give different people different chances to play different roles?. That would be awesome

Let me work out the kinks.  Figure out if we can use the server or if we need to use another.  Ill run it by admins.  Ultimately the server needs to be unranked and private.

I LOVE this idea...it definitely would allow everyone to play more tactical and have to actually think before we began just mindlessly shooting.  You'd have specialists as you said, Damit in a chopper, Sid on the ground, etc.  I'd totally go for an explosives specialist since i'm a C4 whore :)

I think it would be very intriguing and once we got our regulars to understand the concept, it would become a very popular thing.

Regarding a name:

I like Battlefield Tactical War or Battlefield World Domination

Flushy

Battlefield Crimea.... too soon?

On a note about comms I'd try and get it a bit simpler at 1st as most people probably don't have a decent ammount of discipline on comms to make anything more tactical.

Example below is from a group I used to play with who play by proper UK Army structure and comms and at most they run the following.

HQ Section - 3 Men

3 Sections - 8 Men

Each Secion includes a Section Commander and a 2IC

and the comms when people are acting up gets a bit iffy with them but its still only 3 extra buttons for the HQ guy to remember for the 3 sections.

Video for example and this is a load of people playing to a disciplined sense.....

Now imagine the above and then add Cheese to the mix ;-)

So in a sense use the KISS method and have the commander with a whisper for all squad leaders at once so its only button required to whisper them all.
