I got tired of reading sob stories and popularity contests, so I deleted my facebook. My real friends either have my phone number or play video games with me. I see how facebook can be a useful way to communicate, but for the most part I feel like facebook is for desperate people. If anything, facebook can only hurt you because something you post may come across as offensive, etc, and I don't need that while I'm searching for a real job. I mainly only posted pictures or something I found funny, but I honestly don't give a fuck if anyone likes or comments on my posts. I have been considering deactivating my account for the last few months leading up to graduating college, but I finally did it tonight. If anything, I check this website more than I check facebook. Facebook is really intrusive too. I never completed my profile, despite facebook harassing me every time I log in. I would never publicly post where I live or my phone number for someone to see. Fuck off facebook.

Did that years ago while still in in my Sophomore year.   Never regretted it... not even for a moment.

I deleted mine for much the same reasons as you.  Looking back now it never really did anything to help me relate with my friends.

It was just a clusterfuck of popularity polls and lonely people wanting attention. I've had much stronger and more meaning full friendships since then... just with a smaller group of people.

Yeah, my wife & I de-activated our facebook accounts several years ago. It was useful once, but became burdensome.

If one is aware of its pitfalls and sufficiently sensible to avoid them, it is useful to maintain contact with

family around the planet.  If ones family all live in the same town, its worth is greatly lessened.

I use email and youtube.   I make journal-like videos at the end of each year and send them to family.

Believe it or not... email is pretty effective at sending messages to people you know. :)  You can even put in pictures and links and stuff; just like facebook!

well... if you have a good email host like gmail and use it in the browser instead of a software program like outlook. It's quite safe.  Google does a fantastic job of throwing out the garbage and scanning attachments. Absolutely no danger of "accidentally" downloading something you don't want.  You can look at the email and see what the attachment is without any risk at all. Obviously if it's something like a fishy .zip file just down download it. It will stay safely zipped up on a google server somewhere... not your own pc.

I like facebook cos its a way to communicte easier with my family and friends on the other side of the world. Since theres a 6 hour difference between us.. I don;t get to talk to them every day.. So I read what they have been up to on Facebook and see lovely pictures of the people I miss.

So, Facebook is definately a big plus in my life. Then you guys probably think.. you can email.. but.. You can only attach so many pictures.. and lots of my fam dont even know how to attach things, and the pictures are way too huge on email.

Anyhow. Who cares. I don't think you can define a person based upon using Facebook or not. Friendship is a friendship, with or without Facebook, shouldn't matter..!

I've heard facebook also referred to as "nolifebook".  That seems to be the case with some facebook addicts.

In all seriousness, I really don't have people in my past that I care to communicate with that I don't already know how to reach. My youngest daughter practically lives on FB, and I get to hear about all of the whining when somebody posts a comment she didn't like, or hear about somebody who was unfriended and so on. My sister in law was stupid enough to post her home address and phone number on her profile, and that resulted in her computer being hacked and their bank accounts being compromised, and people just love to look up old boy or girlfriends on FB to rekindle an old flame when their marriage or current relationship isn't going as expected. NO FUCKING THANKS. My life is complicated enough without all of the extra drama that results from FB.

When I look at things like FB, cell phones and people who only know how to communicate through social media, I long for the old days when I would go to work in the morning or go fishing for the day, and nobody could reach me. My dad who fought to not get a cell phone until just a few years ago would always say, "why do I need a cell phone? If somebody died I'll find out when I get home."

I got rid of mine a few weeks ago. To me, it became annoying and useless from drama, whiny posts, people just bragging all the time, and yet, no one wanted to talk to me. So much for a "social" site :P. What @eidolon_fire said happened to me, I basically just sat in my room on Facebook rather than actually going outside and talking to peeps. If people want to actually talk to me, or tell me something, they can call me, or come over to my house.

I was kinda stupid when I was younger (when I first made my Facebook) and I put my home address on there. A few years ago these guys on Xbox stalked me through my gamertag (my gamertag was the same as my facebook URL) and found all this shit out and started sending me shit in the mail, they've even sent illegal stuff in the mail and I was almost thrown in jail because the package had my name on it. But no worries, we found out where this shit was coming from, and got them in deep shit.

Probably, All I know is that it was a bunch of people that thought it would be a smart idea to start sending me shit in the mail, calling my phone, and sending threatening texts behind a fake number.

I get your point.. But for me.. with my Family & Friends in The Netherlands.. It's hard since there's a lot of time difference. And we both have separate life's going on. Plus, they can't call me, because I don't have a phone connection yet cos it is too expensive atm. :( And yeah.. coming over to my house.. Is not just a thing they would do now is it ;)  We do talk on OOVOO sometimes (videochat program) but... still that's so different than hanging out or grabbing lunch or go shopping ;)

Facebook +1 (oh and no.. im not someone that stalks people, or that is on FB everyday to read everyone's posts.... I have to play my COD4 ya know.. ;) )
