I am considering and looking into joining Army reserves. Any advise/suggesstions from people who know about this?

I personally have a full-time 9-5 engineering job. I dont know how this fits into my current situation. I do want to serve my country which is why I am considering this. Any thoughts?

I am proud of you man it's always a good thing to serve one's country. I was in the Air Force back in 1974 best thing I ever did it's a great experience I have no regrets.

I want to serve while using the skill set that I have developed (Micro-Electronics Engineering). With parents dependent on me and living with me, baby last week and a hefty mortgage (3600 pm), I dont think I go full-time/active duty. I dont mind serving anywhere (Army/Navy/Marines/Airforce). Just not sure how to do it at this point.

Do you have a degree? If so, OCS is the way to go.  Regardless, expect to be gone 3-6 months for basic/A-school right off the bat.  Being from Irvine, if you went Marine Corps, training would be right down the road from you at MCRD San Diego and Camp Pendleton.

Thanks for the advice guys. Yes I have a Masters in Electrical Engineering. I will look at OCS and similar program for marines. Hope I can find something that I can work with.

Thanks all...

Don't forget the National Guard. Those guys are pretty cool and more laid back than the reserves. Call some of your local guard units to get a feel for what they are looking for. They will be happy to talk to you. Don't trust what a normal recruiter you would find in the mall tells you. Call around to reserve and guard units and ask them directly. It's also a good way to build a relationship within the unit. Just remember when you call these units you will be remembered if you sound like a moron, so have some prepared questions and speak well padawan LOL. Good luck to you!

Oh, and try to go in as an officer if you can. Tell them this is your goal, if in fact it actually is. Officer = more money and less crappy duties.

Good luck in your desires to serve your country.

I am guessing that, unlike our pitiful excuse for a government, yours isn't discharging full-time service personnel

in the hope that the butcher, baker and candlestick-maker in uniform part-time can do an equivalent job.

Mind you, I'd pay good money to see an ISIS ar**hole despatched with a candelabrum!
