Do I need to partition this drive? Or should I? http://www.microcent...WDBSLA0010HNC-N Really needing help with new build everything is soooooo much bigger than the last build. Using this as boot drive  http://www.microcent...ate_Drive_(SSD) If I do should it be 50 50 and use 1 part as back up?

If you are not going to use a second OS (ie linux) there is really no need to partition the ssd...It is a bad idea to back up on the same drive...Always use another drive, preferably more than one... :) :)

Well, technically it's impossible to use a drive with no partitions  ;)

When you install Windows it creates 2 or 3.

Linux creates at least 1 but usually you have a swap so that makes 2.

"Need", no. But personally I would partition it into two. I am a naturally disorganized person so it does help me keep things sorted out. Helps keep partition one semi organized but partition two can be a mess without anything to worry about. Or if partition one gets too much clutter. I also keep some of my lesser used programs installed on the second. I dont have an SSD boot drive. I am sure one day I will.

I have those same drives in mine. Though I have an extra 1 tb hdd that I mirror. I back up to the 1 TB drive (essentially creating 2 backups). Other than for file sharing or drives to be distributed for certain users there is no need to add any partitions to the drive other than what your OS creates.

So if you mirror and fook one up there both fooked up? lol Just good if one fails right?

That's a great idea! (That's what I did...created a mirror of OS and all programs, pics, and files. Then booted from it, once I verified it worked I removed it from my computer and it is now sitting in my safe waiting for the day my primary drive dies)

And I love this thing..... this is just the enclosure and I have two 3T drives in it. It has a built in FTP server, Bit Torrent client, file sharing and much more. I love it!!! You can even attach to a Domain in AD. Linux is the OS. I have another just like it but with just a single 2T drive.

Sorry Mule... that is my external hard drive enclosure. You were talking about extra drives and backups. This is a great way to do backups for the price. The skinny one is a 2T single drive  Buffalo Link Station. The other is an empty enclosure that I put two 3T drives  in. You can put up to 4T drives. Your able to strip the drives or mirror them for redundancy.

Sorry was on vacation.

If you mirror on one fucks up then the other one will still work. If you stripe across multiple drives and one fucks up all data is lost. Mirroring means you have 2 copies and 2 flags for data.
