With my tax return coming soon, my frustration with my old laptop has really boiled my blood recently. I have had pitiful fps in CoD4 for almost five years now. I would like to spend $700-$800 on the computer. I don't need a monitor. I don't even know what all the pieces are to build a computer, so I need some help. Getting 250 fps has been something I've always wanted. I wish I could spend more, but until I find a full-time job, I can't stand my laptop's performance, or lack thereof,  any longer.

You need to let everyone know if you prefer Intel over Amd

Me im a Amd kinda guy and for 700 to 800 you can get yourself a decent build

I think Intel is a little more pricey but not sure

mid tower case

Power supply

mother board

processor

memory

video card

dvd/cd drive

hard drive

I just built one but went a little over board and put in 960.00 bucks for everything

I shopped over a few months and got steals on some stuff like my Spec-03 gaming case

for 45 bucks and now is 199.95 plus shipping

Here is the Spec-01 for 49.99 with a $10 rebate

I might recommend  this, Save a little more for a while and build you a decent computer with lots of expand-ability.   I built this last one and i'm using it over three years now on win 7,  And have never had one problem ever.  And can run everything turned up, And all i have ever done since is update my graphics card, and that was just this Christmas. At the time i only put about a 1000 in to it.. I still have mem slots left and and go with new chips and still just update piece by piece if i want.. Just something to consider.  Good luck..

I built my tower 6 years ago under $800. I have since upgraded my GPU and windows drive to an SSD. I recommend building a desktop as it gives you more options, a laptop for that budget is just not meant for gaming.

I can help you spec parts, ping me if you like.

First off to build a 250 fps computer is a waste of time and money. It's like buying 4 gallons of beer when all you have is a 1 gallon bucket to take it home in...

I assume your monitor runs at 60 fps, with that in mind a single GPU will be fine (running everything on Ultra and maintaining 75 fps). Your screen size will also effect your fps...keep that in mind.

The best way is to get a "Barebones" kit, here is a good example of one for 550 dollars....

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=9584391&CatId=31

INTEL 4690K/MSI Z97/8GB/120GB/500W/CS

This Bundle Includes:

  • Intel Core i5-4690K Processor - Quad Core, 3.5GHz (6MB Cache, up to 3.90 GHz), 2 Memory Channels, 16 Max PCI Express Lanes - BX80646I54690K
  • MSI Z97 GAMING 3 ATX MOBO - LGA 1150 socket, Intel Z97 Express Chipset, 2x PCIe x16, USB 3.0, VGA, HDMI, DVI, DirectX, Crossfire Ready
  • Kingston HyperX Fury Red 8GB Desktop Memory Module Kit - 1866MHz DDR3, CL10, DIMM - HX318C10FR/8
  • OCZ ARC 100 SERIES - 120GB, 2.5", SATA III, Solid State Drive - ARC100-25SAT3-120G
  • Thermaltake VM30001W2Z V4 Black Edition Mid Tower Gaming Case - ATX/MicroATX, USB, Audio, Blue LED fan
  • Ultra LSP Series V2 650-Watt Power Supply - ATX, 6x SATA, 2x PCI-E, 20/24-PIN, Thermal Controlled,135mm Fan, Single +12V Rail, Short Circuit, Over-Voltage and Thermal Protection, 3-Year Warranty

Now all you need is to transfer your old hard drive to this computer, install your games on the SSD and a decent GPU like...

MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 2G OC Video Graphics Card

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=9596384&Sku=RSC-102842348

This one will cost you 230 dollars

Enjoy and post up any questions,

I would stay away from AMD chips for now they are great chips don't get me wrong, but the AM3+ socket is 6 to 7 years old,if you are going to build something don't use old technology.I just priced out a Intel 17-4790k build for a customer for just over $800 for parts. The z97 is the latest chipset from Intel so start from there.

my only advice beyond what anyone has already said is this, if there is something you want but cant afford at the moment then don't go for a cheaper alternative as you will just end up spending more money in the long run. wait until you can afford it, when building a pc patience will always reap the best results. i speak from experience *mourns the wasted £400

Just don't do what my buddy did. We upgraded our Motherboards and CPU.. I was done and was loading my OS.. win 95. He had a hell of a time. I go to find out what was wrong.. he forgot to take out the Motherboard brass pole things from the other board and it was grounding out his motherboard.

Take your time and don't get frustrated.

The easiest way to do it is.... if you have a reddit account....

go here

http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapcforme

tell them your budget and what you are going to be using your pc for and they will give you a decent price list bang for buck..

also

http://pcpartpicker.com/

is a great site for finding the best price on parts.
