I received this email today and thought some of you would enjoy it.

The ones in amusement parks back in the 20’s thru to the 70's ran on electricity. They had a pole on the back going to a metal electrical charged overhead plate. You remember driving the bumper cars at amusement parks or a fair, don't you? They were so much fun... Well, now what do you do with old Bumper Cars?

These little beasties are street legal.

They run on either Kawasaki or Honda motorcycle engines and co-opt vintage bumper car bodies into the most awesome form of mini-car we've seen in too long. There are seven of these little monsters floating around California and they're all the creation of one man, Tom Wright, a builder in the outskirts of San Diego who figured the leftovers of the Long BeachPike amusement park needed a more dignified end than the trash heap.

They were originally powered by two cylinder Harley Davidson Motorcycle engines but they rattled like heck because of the two cylinder Vibration and Tom replaces them with four cylinder Honda or Kawasaki 750's And a couple have been measured as capable of 160 MPH, which is terrifyingly fast in machines with such a short wheelbase. By the way, they are almost indestructible in accidents!

they are in some states.   if you go to 3wheelerworl.com there is a write up about a fellow that rode his quad across the U.S.

Two yrs. ago I sold my side by side to my Brother...He and two of his friends (whom also had side by sides) licensed theirs for the road...To comply with state regulations they had to add a windshield and wipers, a horn and turn signals...Then take them to the State Police Post to be inspected...Then apply for new titles and pay a hefty tax and license fee...They were approved and tagged...After a year of driving them on roads all over the state the Attorney General decided they shouldn't be licensed and they were not allowed to renew their tags...

That sucks. Yet is some states they have golf carts approved for city streets.

Really cool   @@little_old_man

I spent some time in those bumper cars myself growing up in Southern California in fact I think I got my first whiplash in those bumper cars . . . . .  . .good times . .  .lol

And I am "shocked"  that the automobile "gods" that live at the DMV would allow such an unusual vehicle to be licensed.

Calif. DMV  is one of the most screwed up government agencies in Calif, always wanting some kind of document that you don't have . . . in triplicate !! forcing you to make another appointment and miss another day at work  . .but wait there's more . . .  . . . . looks like you just been relieved of this weeks paycheck in fees . . . . .  .welcome to Cali.

In the Big Sky State (Montana) (it's called The Big Sky state because you can see the whole sky . .yup no smog here) they will let you license just about anything.

Even this 1996 Polaris four wheeler that I sorta rebuilt into a single seat "ripper"

54c6ff09de97c_frontviewwhitefenders.jpg

I still feel a little nervous ripping down the road passing a Sheriff  cuz if I was still in Cali  :popo:  they would pull me over (if they could catch me) and confiscate my "ripper" and make me pay a huge fine to get it back.

The other day the local Sheriff (off Duty) stopped by my house and was asking me some questions about it and then asked me if he could take it for a drive . .  .after demanding to see his license I reminded him of the speed limit  . . . .  .now he wants me to build him one.

I wouldn't mind making one myself...Back in the early 70's i made rail dune buggies and sold them...This would be a minie version...

It was pretty easy to do especially if you have a 4 wheeler sitting around not doing anything

I kept the engine and rear suspension all in tact to save a lot of headache putting that part back together but I had to add some spacers to widen the rear axles.

it's only 400cc but I did a few things to liven it up a bit and now it goes as fast as you would want to go in such a small package . . grinning  :D  the whole way

Artimus Prime should be reading this. As I recall he's heavily into building dune buggies.
