“If this resolution passes, we would be forced to close or move. It would destroy Austin barbecue.” says Aaron Franklin, owner of Franklin’s BBQ in Austin.

Austin, Texas has long been a destination for Americans of all stripes in their quest to find the best barbecue in the nation.

However, if the Austin City Council gets their way, food tourism may soon be a thing of the past.

Austin City Council members passed a preliminary plan in April to put restrictions on smoke from barbeque restaurants. Some Austin residents complain of the barbecue smoke saying they can’t enjoy their homes they purchased before some of these restaurants moved in.

The city council’s current proposal will require smoke diffusers and will also limit the amount of time that restaurants can smoke. These restrictions will require at least $100,000 in extra investments for most barbecue restaurants as they will be forced to buy extra smokers along with severely expensive diffusers, and in some cases will have to lease or purchase more property.

One business expert told council members that these restrictions will certainly kill all but the largest barbecue restaurants in Austin.

It is effectively a ban on barbecue restaurants in a town known for its barbecue.

Of course, these regulations are par for the course for a liberal city. Liberals claim to hate big business and love small businesses, but then they love to place so many regulations on the little guy that the environment becomes toxic to entry level entrepreneurs. The ultimate consequence of these policies is that large corporations and governments are the only entities permitted to operate.

I suggest you get your barbecue from Austin as soon as possible so you can tell your descendants how good it was before communism took over.

When they start telling us that our farts can't leave our property is when we'll be in real trouble.

Well, they do have a point in terms of smoke. Many places with air pollution problems do not allow wood burning fireplaces. Just gas. It hasnt happened here yet but it will. On cold nights when there is no strong wind to blow the smoke away (and over someone elses town)  its like being near a forest fire. Because of wind patterns due to terrain, trees and the like, the chimney smoke from one of my neighbors often goes directly to the window of the house next door. Do they just say too bad and tell them to keep the windows closed?

As always its a compromise. The whole thing about keeping smoke on the property is patently silly. But you also dont want your neighbor to be a total smoke generator where you have to keep your kids indoors because its too smokey for them to play outside. I am sure something can be worked out so everybody is fine with it. My guess is that the law itself was aimed at people that burn their trash in residential areas.

I think this might be the most retarded thing I've seen in a couple of weeks.  The stupidity of this country befuddles me.  Everyone has to have a problem with something.

Remember that when I play hiphop or some other obnoxious music late at night. I can no more control sound from crossing my property that you can control your bbq. Whatever happened to common courtesy between neighbors?

It seems that some people always have to be offended by something. If it wasnt BBQ then it would be something else. Those people need to learn to mind their own dam business and let other people live their lives in peace. they should just ban food

Anything done on facebook should be considered suspect by default. I really do think its a hoax because I simply cannot imagine someone would be so stupid as to talking about keeping smoke from crossing property lines. But we live in a stupid country full of stupid people.

A little harsh, but I might see that there was some extra dog poo in her yard....

From the PInellas County Facebook page:

Pinellas County Air Quality has investigated a St. Petersburg resident’s complaint about an alleged objectionable amount of smoke and odor coming from a neighboring property. Air Quality has regulatory responsibility countywide and is obligated to respond to citizens’ complaints. It is important to note that the county was not there to regulate barbecue grilling. The county has not issued any citations and there is no ordinance banning residential backyard barbecuing.

You can turn that down and is an actual annoyance.  A BBQ Smell and the amount of actual smoke that is being created from a grill is nothing close to problematic.  This is just a bullshit problem and should be treated like one.  I just don't understand people in this country.  I guess if you have ever worked in retail it's like two in four people are lacking common sense.
