My question is this: How do I turn my start button back on? It stopped working and I can't get it to come back on.

Yea but it still bugs me that to turn all that off people out there had to come up with ways to do it. And then release their own programs to do so because the methods are somewhat confusing to the average user. That is the problem. MS said nothing and doesnt want you to turn it off. When you have to possibly use registry hacks to do it, something an average user should touch, then something is wrong.

edit: Also nice of you to call people concerned about strict privacy as paranoid.

Win7 is going to end support in a few years and might have to bite the bullet then. But Win11 will likely be out. Or close to it. Assuming they dont can it. Maybe that one will be better than Win10 if they stick to the trend of odd-numbered OS's being the good ones.

Either 8.1 with standard desktop mode will be my choice or 11 If the gods make it so. But for now it will be 7. Good old 7.  Just like I stuck with XP skipped Vista and waited for 7 back in the day. Good things are worth waiting for.

i will own up and say i like win 7 as much as i liked XP ,8.1 didnt rock my boat,10 well its just  a hash together of 7 and 8,

Now the million dollar question how many have a windows phone[cell/mobile/] but pref the android or apple system  to the windows system

Way I see it Windows 7 64 is currently the best of them, windows 10 is worth upgrading to in a few months when the bugs are gone (or almost gone :P)

My question is this: How do I turn my start button back on? It stopped working and I can't get it to come back on.

I had this problem (1 of many) during and after the upgrade. The start button was there but inop.  Also,  all my apps came up saying expired.

Don't know if this will help, but I used this fix:

If having issues with the start menu and other windows components giving the "Your trial period for this app has expired. Visit the Windows Store to purchase the full app." error this might help.

Steps (2 total)

1 - Start Powershell in admin mode.

1. Open Explorer (WIN+E)

2. In the search text box type windowspowershell.exe

3. Right click on WindowsPowerShell.exe in the left pane and click "Run as Administrator"

2 - Disable Develpment Mode and Register

Enter (copy and paste):

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

After running it the Start button worked again.

In the end I set it back to Windows 7- too many issues

Wow. This really is all suspicious to me. Not simply that they are doing it. But that they didnt tell us about it. Considering privacy is a very big deal for many people this kind of thing, if accurate, should have been clearly disclosed. The fact that they didnt tells me that they wanted to bypass this so these privacy issues are circumvented. Tin foil hat? No. Some people dont give two shits about potential privacy violations. Others do.

Whats the difference between a big company collecting private data from you and hackers taking that data once the company has it? One is illegal because we say so.

I could not agree more @@Sammy Be educated. Be aware. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/microsoft-ceo-satya-nadellas-genius-151311535.html This is the end of Microsoft Software as we know it. Windows is no longer a trusted family name as of 2015. All of you Microsoft supporting baddies/employees need to wake up. This is not just a simple patch/program,and a Hack away from a simple fix! Shit has hit the metaphorical fan. Welcome to the age of sheep herding. You being the sheep.  :horse:
