Anybody ever use the company 'cdjapan' to import either music or dvds into the United States? Or Amazon jp? I am curious how strict US customs is if its just one or two BD's. Also whether or not they actually need someone at the door before they would deliver it.

I've ordered DVDs from the UK with no problem and also some cheap electronic stuff on ebay from china (I think it was China).

I didn't have any problems and don't think I had to sign for it or anything.

30th anniversary Macross BD is coming out in Jan and its too good to pass up. So it would be one of those two companies I would preorder from. I just fear some customs official having a bad day and deciding he wants to hold up a small package with a disc or add another %50 to the cost.

It'd be a good idea to check to see if your domestic postal service charges a handling charge

for opening the packet and presenting it to local customs.

I've fallen foul of this in the UK with a postman requiring a payment at the door that has been

more than the goods were worth.

Strangely, the notable exception was when I bought a "USS Enterprise" Zippo lighter from the

wife of a US serviceman stationed in Japan.  It only took a few days to get here and I didn't

have to pay any extra taxes or handling charge.

if the item is new and from the states you might have to pay customs normally this is done at the shop before it beening posted,i would think its the same from Japan also the uk customs can open this to see what it is and then charge you the VAT which is payed by the post services then they get the cash back from you.

there is away around this for small items the shop or person you buy it from puts this is a GIFT ie birthday or xmas then you donot have to pay the vat or if you have done,u can get a refund.

i got a GSP for my motorbike from the states it was a great deal but then got stung by the VAT

I build scale models, many of which I order from Japan.....never had a problem with customs or fees...but I am unsure if there are different rules related to media like DVDs due to potential copyright infringement from pirated movies. You know the movie companies are a powerful lobby here..so wouldn't surprise me if they got some rule passed that says if the item is listed as a DVD, it has to have a duty paid or some BS. I was actually considering ordering that set myself. I Started watching Macross Saga when it first came out...and I was a Junior in high school. Damn I am getting old too fast lol.

Well that tells me I am older than you. First saw the movie in 85-86 when it made the rounds around the various anime communities while I was in high school. If you are talking robotech however, which I didnt actually see until later, you can get that domestically extremely cheap from Amazon.

cdjapan told me that import duties are not something they collect up front because they are simply too complicated with all the various locations around the world having different policies. People around are saying it is unlikely a small package with less than $200 US declared value would be opened up but no guarantees. I am just a worry wart.

edit: Back in my youth there was a Kinokunya store a 10 minute walk away that would order stuff for me. Ah the good ol days.

I would think a seller in Japan can pop a CD or DVD into a UPS or FedEx pouch and ship it to you without the need for it to be opened by customs. I buy stuff online all of the time from overseas that arrives unopened. In fact, I can't recall a single package ever being opened.

Sounds like I dont have much to worry about so as long as the seller and shipper are reputable. That and if I am not trying to import 10 grand worth of merchandise.

Well just made my first ever online order for imported goods via cdjapan. One urusei yatsura bluray and a mari iijima CD. We shall see if there are any problems. Shipping does say a signature will be required but there is tracking included so I should know when it is out for delivery. Wish me luck.

Package cleared customs in San Fran according to EMS tracking. Which is good. But it said nothing about whether or not I am going to be charged any kind of duties. The value of the package itself is maybe 60 bucks US. So based on what a lot of people say that, in the US at least, it is highly unlikely that will happen. But if so I imagine duties on a $60 package wont be that much.
