Written over a century ago . . . . . has stood the test of time...short, and to the point.

What Wilfred Laurier thought of the immigrants wanting to become Canadians in 1907.

First of all we must insist that the immigrant that comes here is willing to become a
Canadian and is willing to assimilate our ways, he should be treated on equal grounds
and it would be shameful to discriminate against such a person for reasons of their
beliefs or the place of birth or origin. But it is the responsibility of that person to
become a Canadian in all aspects of life, nothing else but a Canadian.

There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says that he is a Canadian,
but tries to impose his customs and habits upon us, is not a Canadian. We have room
for only one flag, the Canadian flag.

There is room for only two languages here, English and French.

And we have room for loyalty, but only one, loyalty to the Canadian people. We
won't accept anyone, I'm saying anyone, who will try to impose his religion or
his customs on us.

Wilfred Laurier, Seventh Prime Minister of Canada from July 1896 to Oct 1911

This was actually in a letter written by former president Theodore Roosevelt in 1918 shortly before the end of WW1 in relation to immigrants to the USA.

Just sayin.

This is a tough subject for me. I was an immigrant at one time and my family are one now in Canada. I was proud to become an American citizen but that was not to say I wanted to turn my back on the country that provided me with the morals in which I stand on for.

Canada and the US are immigrant nations, but for some reason in todays world we wish turn our back on the people who made up these nations. With that statement, don't get me wrong. We should do EVERYTHING in our power to vet anyone who wishes to immigrate. We should only except individuals who only have the best intentions towards our countries.

I understand the intentions of the "one flag" thing but that's overkill. When my family relocated back to Canada, my girls and wife were immigrants in a new nations and there we those few who looked down on them for being American. I bought a large American fridge magnet to remind my daughters that they could be incredibly proud of the country they were born. My daughters have grown now but that flag remains.

My family and myself are proud American-Canadians.

I agree with you totally Pete, I was born In Canada to American Parents. I have citizenship for both countries and am just as loyal to one as I am to the other. And I fly both flags on my property.

But I think what the statement johnny posed is more to do with the expectations of immigrants. When they move to another country they should be expected to live the way of that country and culture and not the expect the country to change for them.

This whole debate going on right now in Canada for instance over the Niqab is driving me bat shit crazy. All our Prime Minister is saying is it should NOT be worn at a citizenship ceremony, its a slap to the face of Canadian culture. After the ceremony feel free to wear it where you desire. But that people should be aware that our law enforcements and security personnel could ask them to remove it on occasion. Its not that hard to ask of someone that "TRULY" wishes to become a Canadian.

I agree King. I work in the medical field and we ask patients to remove their Niqab all the time without a problem. I assume they have to show their face for their immigration documentation so what is the issue when doing so for this simple event.

It almost feels like it's politically motivated by others in the election. Others trying to make political points during this election season.

if you move to a different country, that's where you're loyalty should lie, also learn and speak the language. By ALL means be proud(if you are) of where you came from, but if you can't be loyal first to your new country, then go back home. Don't move there cos the new country i.e. the uk, will gladly give you a house and benefits, free nhs and so on. be proud where you live.

btw, I don't really like my country, but I was born here, and no other bastards will let me in :P
