Normally I can fix just about anything on a computer.  This problem has me stumped.  HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

C (boot) drive started to get too full, so I foung me a new one and used "Acronis" to migrate (clone) all to the new drive.  Now I have a problem with the Icons on the desk top.  I put shortcuts to all the games and other important stuff on the desktop.  When I finally got the computer to boot off of the new drive almost all of the Icons are the generic(no program pic).  So far I do not believe that it is drive dependant( i have 4 drives in this comp).  Please let me know what ya'll think.  I know im going to loose sleep tonite.

old drive: Maxtor 80gb  IDE

new       : Maxtor 160gb  SATA

OS         : Windows 7 ultimate

Please let me know if u need more info.

Thanks in advance.  Merry Christmas!

P.S.  What is a good way to take a "snapshot" of a system build(items in comp) and post them to like a forum for others to see?

Can't you go to START->programs then right click on program you want shortcut for and make a new shortcut icon?..Then you could just delete the generic ones...SmileSmile

try what bart said for fixing icons.

for posting a comp spec, go to: control panel/system  on windows 7 it will show a list of the main stuff like cpu, ram, os, and i think on my desktop it even shows vid card, but it's not showing it on my laptop for some reason, so Im not positive on the gpu or not.

I guess right-clicking the desktop and playing with the icon size doesn't help?

For the program that displays/ saves off your rig's spec, how about the free offering from Piriform called Speccy?

If creating new shortcuts doesn't help,you can try rebuilding the icon cache;

You have to give GSWho some slack.  We're not all that tech savvy in Idaho.  We're still sending messages by jack rabbit. Tongue out

Some cloning software can be very picky about cloning to a hard drive of different size, though I don't know in your case as I've not used that program.

You also didn't mention if you are are running 64bit OS.  If so, it can have issues reproducing the paths for icons to 32bit programs.  Possibly due to the varibles path of OS.  So it could be trying to locate the .ico file with C:\program files\etc, whereas naturally your 32bit programs .ico files will be in c:\program files(x86)\etc.

Easiest way to sort this is right click your shortcuts on your desktop, then choose properties.  Then click change icon.  Then you will probably get an error message that it can't find it in %program files% etc, so click browse.  Browse to the correct location of the .exe add you should see an .ico file in the same location.  Choose that, and bingo your done.  Sometimes programs don'y have a separate .ico file, so choose the .exe instead, which should work on those occasions.

Hope this helps ;)

It surely depends of what version of Acronis. Mine works sweet and some builds are messy or buggy.

I use the:

"Acronis True Image Home 2010 Build 7046" for over 3/4 years now without problem.

I think it depends on how you "installed" the new drive and formatted it. Most likely windows gave it a drive letter, or if you had your other disks removed it changed the letter ordering. Do you have the original drive to put back in and have it back the way it was?

Whenever I can I use a linux boot disk and clone one to the other. I have used this and it has given me no issues. After its done it will shut down your pc and you just swap cables with the original drive and away you go.

You still have the old drive and running with no issues? You sure did the HDTune and CHKDSK before cloning?

@Nutcutter, I never had to change drive letters in Windows by Acronis. For sure when to add a new drive or erased partition,  the MBR assignment is only needed before the Acronis cloning. I just put the computer is sleep mode and add the (sata) drive and wait till it is reconized ;)

GSWho maybe try that build, I was mentioning?

Back in the OL days when Ghost 5.0 (-ntil -ntic) worked as a charm. Plus copy sector by sector. I just use this 2010 build and hopefully you get it sorted.

I am not sure either but cloning is cloning and that is not OS dependant. Same as doing a mirror, but sometimes windows knows more than you and adds info to the drive. Maybe not MBR is it system volume information? Also makes me wonder if the original disk had more than one partition?

Yes something like a signature and combined with the volume serial number.

MBR = Master Boot Record.

Just weird that Acronis didn't clone that well and was wondering about the FAT Table/MBR/Sectors to be fine or not.

If I remember it does all the disk checks before it clones the drive. And free for idiot (personal) use Laughing
