I have been having problems of late with my PC shutting down everything but the fans while in COD 5. Only crashes in game. I have to hold down the power button 4-5 seconds and then restart to get going again. No key or key combination works.

The PC does not crash at any other time but in game.

The video card is a GeForce NVIDIA 295.

The motherboard a 610839169894ASUS P6T SE MB SKT 1366.

Intel Core - i7 920 CPU 2.66 GHz

Mushkin 6Gb HP3-12800

I think the problem is the video card because it only happens in game.

So with the information above can suggestion be made for a compatible upgraded video card that  can be easily installed and work with what I have?

Understand I only copied in the information above from a sales slip and am basically computer illiterate. I have never been inside my computer case.

Suggestions on a video card please.

I would not be so fast as to toss stuff out the door before you find out the problem. Do you have another video card to test out your computer with ? There are alot of things that can shut down a computer in game. Start by playing with the case cover off and have a look to see if its dirty in there look between the cooling fins on the video card and prossesor. Push your ram down into the MB to make sure there not loose and out of there sockets. This is all real easy to do its just a look see . Try that stuff out .

Sounds like your card is overheating. turn your V/C fans all the way up and see if that works. I had to run mine @ 90 % to 100%

Also you can check you error logs to see what is locking up your PC. After a lockup and restart type in the run command event viewer. search in there for about the same time as the lock up.

Labob is correct as a memory stick could have just come loose. Take the memory out and place it back in. Same with video card.

Lockup problems must be systematically diagnosed. Wizid offers excellent starting advice, you need to check the windows system logs to see if an event was recorded. What operating system are you using? What is your hardware configuration?

Usually, video card issues will start with some screen artifacts. Are you seeing any video anomolies just prior to the freeze?

The next step is a clean and reseat. Take some canned air and blowout all the dust from your case interior. Remove the video card and blowout the cooler and fan. Remove the RAM modules and carefully reseat them all....DO NOT just check they are tight, pull them all out and reseat. Make sure the power supply, CPU cooler and fan are clean by using the canned air on them. Reseat all connecting cables to the mobo.

The number one problem with system freezes is the system power supply. Over time they lose effeciency and the current to the voltage rails fades away. What power supply do you have and how old is it? When working on customer systems the power supply is the first component I troubleshoot after I've exhausted software/malware, OS issues and dirt.

Since most you don't know me....a little background. I've been building and repairing computers for 25 years.

What Xtreme said. Though, based on what you have for a processor, it seems that your system is relatively new, though I wouldn't discount the power supply being the culprit just yet. I'm thinking the video card is overheating, as others have suggested. I have 2x EVGA GTX 550 TI's and two nights ago I forgot to crank up the fans before the game. I usually idle them at about 50%. Mid game, the system abruptly shut off. Turning up the fans to 95% ensured that no further shutdowns occurred. Your video card should have utilities available to regulate fan speed either manually or automatically based on temperature thresholds.

I'll TRY to take the sides off, buy some canned air and give it a good blow job to clean out the pipes. BTW, how did such a sexual act become called a blow job? That would not be a good thing.

I will also try to make sure things are seated properly.

Now I just need to get the nerve up to look indie the case, if I can figure out how to open it. Frown

2 years and never opened the case....you might want to use a vacuum cleaner to get started. There could be a ton of dust. You're definately going to need to remove the video card to give it a good cleaning.

Well I finally gathered the nerve and removed the sides to my PC. Inside there was very little dust even though I have never opened the case since 2/2010.

Still I took a vacuum to what dust I could see which was mostly on the top of the 750 W power supply. I also used up a can of air dusting anything that might hold dust with particular effort on the CPU.

The sides are still off, including one side that had a fan mounted on it. I still have 3 fans I can see , one on the CPU, one top of case and one back of case.

Things are much improved but I still get an occasional hard crash. Next thing will be to get to the CPU and check the heat sink material. Looks like prongs click into hole on th MB to hold the fan into place over the CPU. I think I just have to pinch the prongs on the back side of the MB to allow me to pull off the fan. When I see the CPU I will try to figure that out.

I see lots of web posts about the GTX 295 overheating but I do not think I will be taking a video card apart to clean it.

I am so useless with computers. I even put off doing it because it is unknown territory. If it's the video card I might just get a new one.
