When I was a kid many moons ago I used to recreationally fly fish for pan fish, not like I knew what I was doing.

Now with the boat I have considered getting a fly rod again.

I am not a serious fisherman and just want to pass time with store bought gear.

I grew up fly fishing in southern Ohio for bass and panfish. Then I moved to California over 30 years ago and tried my hand at fly fishing for trout and steelhead, but I'm not much on eating either of them. Got into saltwater fishing then figured out ways to ocean fly fish and it's a blast, especially when you get a big lunker on a 10 foot rod. I once caught a 28 pound striped bass, 22 pound salmon and numerous big rock cod fly fishing in the ocean.

Sweet! I love fly fishing but don't get to spend near enough time doing it. I have one particular fly that I was taught how to tie by a friend and have caught 5 different species with it. It's a blast. I only wish I had a boat :/

Fly fish, did someone say fly fish? I have been fly fishing since I was 10-11. I am soon to be 55. I fish for Sea run Brook trout and Sea Run Atlantic salmon. I can't remember how many Salmon I have caught over the years but I enjoyed everyone of them. They are a great fighting fish. Some people think the taste god too Mmm. I also fish Brown trout but mostly with hard ware in a lake very close to my home.

Here is a link of me releasing a 35 inch sea run Atlantic salmon last June. It was quite hard to video this and hold the fish at the same tme but you will enjoy it I hope. When I go fishing I loose all track of time and even what day it is as you can hear me. Really isn't that the point about fishing to forget about work, bills etc.

Enjoy the video, Weed

PS; I am currently useing 2 different sage rods one is a 4 piece Sage S-AXIS 8 weght line the other is a 2 peice Sage RPL 9 weight.

Don't tell Mrs Weed but I just ordered a Beulah 11 foot Switch rod # 8 line c/w a Snowbees GEO 9/10 fly reel. This is a 2 handed rod set up. I also ordered a Snowbees auto inflatable fly fishing vest. I can't wait.

Awesome video Weed! I think the best thing about fly fishing is that you can go out and fly fish all day long, never catch anything and still have fun. =)

I have fished all my life...I lived on a small lake until I was ten, next door to my grand parents on my fathers side...I was around six years old before my parents would let me wade fish the trout stream at my Grandparents cabin...Before that I had to fly fish from the shore (you really learn to watch your back cast that way and how to roll cast )...My Grandparents on my mothers side lived on a river where I honed my catfishing skills...I have never fished the Gulf or the Ocean but would like to someday... :) :)

It's been awhile since I last did any flyfishing, but now that I am retired (finally) I am going to be able to do so. I live in Eastern Washington, Yakima to be exact and up in the Yakima Canyon the river is flyfishing only, barbless hooks, 1 fish limit, which is about all I would want anyway. The Bow's get up to a fair size, 10# are not uncommon... I think a 15" would be perfect for me to take home.

I am originally from Texas where I learned my fishing skills on Bass and Crappie and Channel Cat, and I do still miss the Channel Cat, catfish up here taste really weird. I got into flyfishing when I got to WA and began to tie my own flys..... I tie a Jay/Daves Hopper that looks real and is a killer, the Steelhead like them and so do the Bow's; problem is with the way my fingers have stiffened, each one will take awhile. But you can't beat tieing something that fools a nice fish.

I also have all the other gear and go for Steelhead and Salmon in the Yakima, Klickitat, Cowletz and the Columbia. Biggest Steelie so far was 18 1/2# and on the Cowletz River my biggest Salmon was 40#.... there again, a long time ago for the Salmon, last year for the Steelie. Perhaps one of these days, if your ever up this way contact me... maybe we can go fishin'. :geek:

Good release Weed, lots of fishermen don't know to hold the fish for awhile so it gets it's bearings before the release. Release to soon and they can go belly up and die.

I also liked Monks comment about barbless hooks. All fishing I will do is barbless. I like the relaxation fishing brings but do not want the fish. (Meat and potatoes man) Barbless allows for good sport with as little harm done as possible to the fish.

Yeah Shamu, a barbless hook will make the fight a lot more even. You really have to play em or a quick turn and you will loose them. I love the sport, but only occasionally take one home. In another post I was reading, it talked about releasing your fish... If you have really fought the fish, it is going to be really tired and as we will build adreneline as we fight they build something too and when the fight is over, it acts like a toxin. Hold your hand loosely just in front of the tail and lightly support their body. Slowly push, then pull the fish backward to lightly force water through their gills till they revive enough to start fighting your grip of the tail.. then they will most likely survive. That 40# Chinook I caught, I fought for about and hour, up and down river. When I finally got him in, he was so tired I had to work with him for another 15 minutes till he came out of his duldrum and I let him swim away. Remember to help them if it is at all possible; to maintain or fisheries. An again if possible, remove the hook without touching them if you can, they have a light layer of "scum" on their bodies that protect them from infection and if they loose a little of it, they can pick up something and die... remember our hands are covered with bacteria that is foriegn to them.

I am a die-hard fly fisherman. SW Wisconsin has hundreds of miles of spring creeks filled with wild browns and brookies.
