All,

Prepping for a build, and looking for some input.  Looking to get the biggest bang for my dollars, so in order to get the graphics card I want I was looking at going to an intel i5 processor instead of an i7.  Anyone running or have input on the i5 4670k?  Building this new computer mainly for BF 4, and unfortunately the specs aren't out yet.  Just looking for any input my fellow idiots may have.

1 review of 739 gives 5 stars....best bang for the buck!!

Pros: * Multitasking is a breeze! Against my room mates 3880 i-7, this processor smokes his!

* Fast processor. This 8 core competes with my room mates 3880 i-7.

*
Price. 200$ for a true 8 core? That's amazing! I went with an AMD build
specifically because it saved me 600$. Granted, Intel build with
similar stats would have had an overall better performance of around 20%
but a 50% increase in price for 20% better performance? Not worth it in
my book, since I am on a budget.

Cons: * The fan that came stock with the processor is
pathetic. I had to buy a fan roughly twice the size to keep my processor
running between 10 and 35 degrees C.

* Running multiple things
is a breeze, yes but when it comes to running just 1 or 2 programs, the
3880 i-7 is faster. Also, with gaming, brief lag spikes occur due to
buffering happen more often on my computer than my room mates year old
computer with a 3880 i-7 in it but hey, that's the difference between a
true 8-core that is 200$ from AMD and a 400$ processor from Intel.
Overall, it's about 15-25% less performance than the 3880 i-7.

Other Thoughts: * I'm quite content with this processor.
I wish in some aspects it was a little faster but I'm a high
expectation gamer on a budget. If looking to build a BEAST computer that
can keep up with all of the games coming out (so long as you can afford
the graphics card), I do recommend going AMD and with this processor.

I went with an AMD build too, no regrets whatsoever

I read somewhere on the net saying the Haswell cpu definitely have some improvement over the Ivy Bridge and Sandy Bridge but not much. The only concern so far is the heat generated by those cpu if you try oc.  But hey if you can afford the cpu, I bet you also can afford a decent cpu cooler, right?

when trying to build your own gaming rig, don't be cheap to yourself.  you get to enjoy your rig that can deal with more games, not just for bf4.

i got an amd build much cheaper than an intel build and there are only a few intel cpus better than my current cpu and they start at around 600... my cpu was 170... not worth the 5% better benchmark score

Hi, for gaming you should go for the i5 really. If you are rendering video then the AMD FX 8350 would be the better option due to it having more threads. Although if you are rendering, then it would be better just to shell out for an i7 as they smoke the AMD 8350 in every way. (If you don't believe me, check out a few benchmarks)

The AMD 8350 is an eight core CPU but it is widely known that AMD cores do not perform as well as intels. Roughly half the performance, meaning that the AMD CPU performs roughly the same as a four core intel even though it has 8 cores.

TBH though, if you are only using it for gaming then the CPU does not matter as much as you might think. You should spend the most money on a graphics card. Many people seem to make the mistake of buying an overly expensive CPU, and buying a lower performance graphics card. Just make sure the processor is a quad core or higher in order to avoid bottlenecking the GPU.

Both of these CPU's are good mid range choices though. You won't really go wrong with either.

You didn't specify your budget. There's a CPU for every budget and that's where "bang for the buck" comes into play.
