We Americans are always hearing about long waits to have medical procedures done in Canada. Well I have the record holder here. This Quebec man waited 68 years to have his cataracts removed and got his eye sight back.

Sorry Pete, I just couldn't help myself.

In Canada yes we do have a universal health care system but it is different for each province, and it goes on the case, if it is an emergency or not, and I would not change my health care system for anything, my dad had a heart attack and was treated at one of the top 5 heart institutions in the world(The civic hospital here in Ottawa at he heart institute), we paid absolutely nothing, my older brother had three hernias and we paid nothing at all, so yes we do have to wait but I would rather wait then pay outrageous amounts of money because it will be taken care of by the government as it should be.

Ok guys, before this turns into a heated debate, it was a joke. If you read the link it has aboslutely nothing to do with Canadian healthcare. A man was born blind, fell down some stairs, broke some bones in his face, and the doctors fixed his eyes at age 68 and he can now see. It's really an amazing story and my little jab at Canadian healthcare was just a joke.

So lighten up people.

uhm... the guy didn't get his eyes fixed because when this happened to him, medical science didn't have the technology to fix it. It had nothing to do with him waiting. Just sayin' ...  but a good rip on the Canadians. ;)   At the moment, I've had an ear infection for 5 months. We pay out the ass for health care. I CANNOT go directly to my ENT 'cause my 'primary care physician' has to approve it. So... 2 courses of antibiotics, one diagnosis of "oh, that's just your body's natural healing process," and 5 months of misery, I'M STILL waiting for the US healthcare system to fix my problem. I won't even get into my heart and stomach issues. In Canada, I'd probably be all done...and it wouldn't have cost me a damned penny out of pocket. If it's cheaper for everyone to pay in, why the HELL do we have to all pay a LOT more for crappier health care? I really don't understand. The only ones who benefit from our system are the insurance companies.

Yes, you are screwed Pete, sex "reassignment surgery" is not covered in most Canadian provinces except for Quebec... sooo, if you want to remove your genitals you have two choices: Going to Mexico or asking Kamikaze and RIP what the requirements are for "L'assurance maladie" to pay for it lol

The Canadians that  do go to the US for Heathcare is normaly because a specialist of a certain type is available in the US before there is one available in Canada... and guess what... we only go if it is covered by our OHIP... so we still pay nothing LOL.

Canadian Heathcare For The Win!!!!!

For the different operations and broken bones myself and my family has had over the years, if we were in the US, we would be in the poor house! From what i hear you are looking 10K just for a broken bone in the US. I have broken both arms (one has had 3 surgeries on the elbow) an ankle, i have had 3 nasal surgeries trying to correct sleep apnea, son had opperations for bladder infections and tonsils out, not a cent outta my pocket

I was on vacation in Florida one year and fell quite ill for the entire week I was there.  Did not have any travel coverage that time so ended up seeing a doctor there and cost me a $100 bucks just to see him.  And still sick for the rest of the week.  I agree that our system is not perfect but I do think it works and more importantly, does not discriminate by how much money you have or don't have.  Every citizen is entitled to the same quality care.  It's one of the things that makes this country great.

@LOM Nice article.  No jab taken by that one.  How things advance, back then they did not have the abiilty to fix his eyes, now they call it a simple procedure.  Is a great story about being able to provide this guy with sight to really see the world in his time.

Many Canadians come to the US for healthcare. That should tell you something.

This only happens when a certain procedure in Canada is considered "cosmedic" or the procedure isnt offered in Canada at all. Cosmedic surgery is paid for out of pocket here in Canada. Then usually if that cosmedic procedure is cheaper in the USA, then yes travelling we will go. But if it wasnt a cosmedic procedure and covered by our health system i see no reason why a Canadian would travel to the USA for healthcare.

Then I guess heart surgery is considered "costmetic" and Newfoundland premier Danny Williams wanted it done by the best in the US.

Lived in both countries and both are messed up in their own ways. In the US, you can get what ya need, when ya need as long as you got the money. In Canada, you get what you need, but may be dead by then... We pay a crap load in taxes to get our health care, but my neighbor in VA's wife went back to work for the sole purpose of paying for their family's health care... Like I said...both messed up. If some country found the perfect system, I think we'd all have adopted it.

Correct, but i also said that Canadians would jump the border for procedures if not offered in Canada and with Premier Danny Williams, such was the case if i recall. But none the less, living on a Government salary raises his options to get done what he needs where he needs it..

Yup, you pay for your neighbors healthcare through taxes & they will pay for yours.... Right?

Why not just pay for yourself?

All American needs is healthy competition in all insurance & healthcare providers and the price will come down.

No need to have a third party (Gov. Officials) to decide who pays, is there?

Oh well...

It all sounds good until you can't get permission for care....
