If so your son's data is probably still there, he just can't access it. I got the ICE virus just a few days ago and it took me almost 2 hours but I got rid of it. That freeking virus turned off my antivirus software then had it's way with me for a while. First thing is to disconnect the laptop from the internet, then reboot it in safe mode. Once you get there you can run your antivirus program to get rid of it, or download a fix for it on another PC and save it on a flash drive, then boot up the laptop from the flash drive. There is lots of info out there on what they call these viruses (ransomware) and once you identify the one you have it's pretty easy to get rid of them. Boot back into the computer in safe mode with networking and download a small program called RKILL.once downloaded, run it and it will shut down anything that is running on your system in safe mode that isnt windows based. Then runs your antivirus and a spyware program like malwarebytes or superantispyware and it will get rid of your issue. I guarantee it. RKILL is awesome. A half hour and the job was complete.
