Was it the FBI or the ICE screen that won't go away and locks up the laptop? If so your son's data is probably still there, he just can't access it. I got the ICE virus just a few days ago and it took me almost 2 hours but I got rid of it. That freeking virus turned off my antivirus software then had it's way with me for a while.

First thing is to disconnect the laptop from the internet, then reboot it in safe mode. Once you get there you can run your antivirus program to get rid of it, or download a fix for it on another PC and save it on a flash drive, then boot up the laptop from the flash drive.

There is lots of info out there on what they call these viruses (ransomware) and once you identify the one you have it's pretty easy to get rid of them.

Your son's PC is not really "hacked".

Here it is called the "BKA trojan". The same thing.
Follow this how-to and you should be able to get rid of it:

https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v71075396_EndUserProfile_en_us

But one well-intentioned advice:
Rescue the all data after that and re-install your OS. Nobody knows if this fu*king trojan
downloads more crap from the web. (more spyware, keyloggers etc)

This virus/trojan comes as a drive-by download from infected or special created websites
(often alleged warez websites, music download sites or simply through a faked Torrentfile)
or with an infected email attachment. You should train your son some security things:

- don't open attachments from unknown senders

- keep away from warez, music, movie sites (which stream recently released movies for free for example)

some more tips: (and incomplete)

Tachnoboy has is right! Also, stay away from the "free codecs". If you "need" a special codec, chances are you don't. It's one of the most popular ways to get people to install viruses and malware....that is...offering something that not normally free FOR free.

Ive seen this exact thing happen that i cleaned off a friends computer. Boot back into the computer in safe mode with networking and download a small program called RKILL.once downloaded, run it and it will shut down anything that is running on your system in safe mode that isnt windows based. Then runs your antivirus and a spyware program like malwarebytes or superantispyware and it will get rid of your issue. I guarantee it.  RKILL is awesome.  A half hour and the job was complete.

The new and improved ransomware virus won't let you reboot in safe mode which is what I had. If you have that particular version you need to boot from a flash drive with the cleaner program on it.

these people who set this shit up on the internet should be covered in gas set on fire dont let them die, let them have the pleasure of a burn unit in the hospital were they peel the dead skin off every day for 3-6 months then when they heal do it again.by the second time they know the pain thats coming they might just off them selfs...

They got me last year m8, they will have had no idea they were targetting a child, (not that would have made any difference to them) they just see a PC  as an opportunity  to make money, you or him obviously clicked on some scam e-mail link or something like that and they got access to your PC  through that, somebody did post a possible fix for this, if i get time today i will try and dig it out, try to keep your Firewall on at all times.

Some time if you use cleaner prog. clean you pc it not all time clear all. it maybe leave somethink your harddrive. best solution you reinstall all again and format your harddrive 2 times that is best solution.
