In game the other day the talk turned to music and one of my favorites by Don McLean, The Day the Music Died:

and the meaning behind the song:

Gotta admit I am somewhat of a Don Mclean fan which also includes the song about Vincent van Gogh... Starry Starry Night

I sort of like songs that have a real story behind them.

(Alice in Chains)They've come to kill the rooster is about the Jerry Cantrell's uncle  or father being shot down in Nam and being hunted by the baddies.

Layla was Clapton's (?) attempt to lure George Harrison's wife away from him.

Robert Plant (Zeppelin) has three songs based on The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Dream Police is an arrest where Neilson said you can't take my dreams or something like that. I need a god reliable source on this one............

Keep on Rockin' in the Free World was inspired by a picture in the newspaper of Iyatllah Komenie's body (with a burning U.S. flag in the background) Poncho Sampedro turned to Neil Young and said Let's just keep rockin' in the free world...........

This is a song that is revered in my family, as my Grandfather went down with this ship.  My Grandfather was Blaine H. Wilhelm and was an oiler on that ship.  Gordon Lightfoot told this story based on a tiny article in Newsweek the week after it happend.
