So yea. Was playing Battlefield with the fellows today. around 2pm PST. when suddenly my computer turned off. "well that's a bummer" i think to myself. Followed by the thought "Do i smell smoke?"

Sure enough smoke is shooting out of my tower like it picked up a bad habit. Quickly unpluging everything and cracking it open i couldnt find the source of the smoke. After a few tests i discover the 700w 80PLUS powersupply has fried. (for the second time. This one was RMAed before) so i go out pick up a new 850w 80Plus Gold and plug it in.

Turns on fine with just the mobo. Happy with that i plug everything else in. Wont turn on. Testing reveals when the hard drives are powered it wont turn on. Further testing reveals it's just the cable. Relief!

Then it wont recognize a graphics card. Oh no one burnt out too? No just another faulty connection. Easy fix. and back to being ready to play BF4 soon!

The best part was this was much faster than last time where it took 12 hours a reinstall of the OS and 3 trips to 3 different stores.

U gotta clean that sucker out with an air compressor a couple times a year. ;) If you let it get clogged with dust it will surely overheat.

I usually do. I think ive just been running my PSU to it's limit. Well over infact. Before i thought a 700w power supply gave 700w. Until i read up on 80Plus and figured out i was only going at 80% max efficiency when my power requirement was almost exactly 700 if not a tad over. So it just couldnt take a full load. New PSU runs at 88% efficiency with more power over all so i should be fine. But nothing is more depressing than the smell of burning electronics when gaming :(

Also - Please everyone.  Use these

Not for the battery backup, but for the protection of voltage spikes and power fluctuation.   You don't need to buy one that can handle the watts of your PSU.  Just to keep your power regulated.  I have a 1200 Watt PSU and a house built in the 80's  If I plug it into my wall the entire houses power pulses for about 5 mins until a breaker trips.    Got one of these and never had a power issue since.  Plus its actually protected my PC multiple times during storms and power outages.
