Last fall I suffered a significant drop in kidney function and after months of tests, got a diagnosis yesterday: multiple myeloma. This is a rare cancer of the plasma cells in the bone marrow and unfortunately, is incurable. The cause is unknown though it may be related to an abnormal chromosome. Typically, kidneys are the first organs which suffer.

The object of treatment is to push the disease into some aspect of remission and depending on various factors, including current stage, there's been good success adding years to life - average lifespan from diagnosis is 3-4 years. Treatment usually involves intensive chemo and various other drugs but I won't know those options until a battery of new tests determine where I am with it.

I intend to conduct my life as normally as I can, and fight with everything I've got. We have to play the cards we're dealt, and I am thankful for my friends at XI and the 67 good years I have had on the planet, and hopeful for many more.

I'm sorry to hear that Harry. Being in radiology, I have some background on your diagnosis. With a good mind frame and a solid treatment, you can beat this. Are they considering SCT Harry?

Sorry to hear this Harry, and know that you will be in our prayers. I was diagnosed with a brain tumor in September following severe headaches and a positive CT Scan. I went surfing in Florida the following week and when I got home was sent for an MRI. The MRI came back negative. During the time I thought I had a tumor, I was determined to do one thing with all my might, fight! So, fight Harry! My family will be praying for you.

Don't know as yet Pete - awaiting appointment with hematologist to go through another battery of tests including bone biopsies, but I did read that the cutoff for that is age 65 - I'm 67. Unless there's some medical reason for that, don't understand why there would be one.

As you likely know, this is very rare: only about two percent of all cancers. Treatments all include chemo but otherwise vary depending on lots of factors. And it's unlike other cancers. The not-knowing as yet where I am in terms of stage, etc., is the worse part - that, and of course, getting your head around a diagnosis like that; and I'm not there yet.

Thanks!!

Dude, I'm really sorry. My Grandmother died of cancer... life blows sometimes. The worst thing about getting cancer is if you let your spirit get down. Keep your chin up and keep a positive outlook and you'll get through it. We're here for you man!

On a lighter note... will you make time for a bucket list? That's what I would be thinking. All those things I want to do but never did. At least it will help you keep your spirits up.

Harry, if a similar automated system was in use on the forums to that employed in BF4, I'd be kicked and banned...

Your awful news induced an outburst of coprolalia more fitting to the battlefield itself!

You know about words on a page as they're old friends but they don't adequately convey the emotions one feels when

receiving this sort of stuff or the deeply-felt warmth and sympathy - damn it, the love that must be sent through the ether!

The anger, the questioning, the puzzlement...  How?  Why?!  Why you?!!!

If memory serves me correctly (bear with me, old fella, as we are of a like generation...), you're not a deeply religious guy

so I am going to ask your forgiveness before I pray mightily for you as I do for all who are sick and suffering.  I have

unshakeable faith in the real power of prayer and I know that many of my good brothers and sisters in Christ on here are

going to unite with me in a single voice to the Heavenly Father on your behalf.

If you prefer the scientific response, yes, I had to look that thing up.  Now I know the USA and England are two separate

countries and you benefit from some stuff, especially in the medical field, that just isn't on the menu of options here.

Our NHS reckons that 15% of sufferers can go 10 years with this.  A lot can happen in a decade.

I can't do much with words other than to assure you that, whenever you care to stop by, your friends here will remain supportive.

If you need to vent, vent!  If you need to cry, cry!  Hopefully, somewhere in the midst of all this, we shall continue to laugh!

Be strong and may God Bless You!
