lol. If I did I'd lose the wedges in the logs, most are sponge-like from sitting for 3 years.

If it's rotten it's garbage. Rotten wood is crap for burning... if I'm not mistaken it can do a number on a chimney pipe if you burn enough of it.

Really? I would think just the opposite. Hardwood usually gets harder after it seasons for a couple years. I used to make fence posts out of white oak branches that were good for at least 10 years. Locust makes the best posts, 20 years minimum.

Yes. They were dead when they were sawed down and were laying on their side for those years.

Yep. It makes a big difference when carving something big... the wood won't split or crack all over.

The best carving wood you can get has been drying for decades in a solar kiln.

My dad used to cut wild cherry and black walnut on our farm in Ohio into 2 ft long sections, dip the ends of the logs in wax and just store them for years until they cured. Just about any wood can crack if it dries too quickly and the wax prevented too much moisture from escaping too quickly. He also used to make decoys from wild chestnut trees that died of blight around the turn of the century, but some of the wood was still usable after 60 years laying on the forest floor. Really hard stuff.

My boy and I still split wood the old fashioned way.  Granted it's lodge pole pine, but we both enjoy the exercise and the feeling of accomplishment.

I had a mesquite tree in my back yard in California. Cooking a steak over mesquite is very tasty.

As for fire wood I collect western red cedar that collects at the launch ramp at the lake. When the water level comes up in the early summer the dead dried wood collects at the launch ramp and is a boating hazard. The park service is very happy when I bring my pickup and remove the wood. I get enough to heat my house all winter for FREE. The cedar smells good when you cut and split it and smells good when you burn it too,

Also

I have found that ladies appreciate the good hard wood I provide them  . . . . . .
