Well 10 minutes ago (3:30 AM) my family was shaken out of bed by a big earthquake, the biggest I've felt in a very long time. It was between a 5.7 and 6.1 on the "R" scale and made a mess out of shit in our house but everybody is OK.  It was centered about 30 miles from my home.

Nothing on TV yet as everybody at the networks scramble to figure out what the fuck happened but I'll update as I know more.

Glad to hear your family is ok LOM.  Watching it on the news right now.  They are saying it was a 6.0 earthquake.  The pics look pretty bad.  Stay strong LOM.

Looks like the town of Napa took most of the damage, and they've upgraded the quake to a 6.1. Not "the big one" but big enough to remind us that we live in earthquake country and should always be ready for them. Napa is about 20 miles east of where I am and the epicenter of the quake was 6 miles south of Napa. Lots of 150+ year old Victorian era building in Napa and where I live in Petaluma, so those old brick structures don't hold up well when the shaking starts. Looks like about 100 people injured and quite a few critically.

When the last big one hit here in 1989 (6.9 magnitude) that killed so many people and destroyed so many building and highways, my wife and I were on our honeymoon in Hawaii. When we got back a few days later it was obvious how bad the damage was. Glad this one wasn't that big.

Well when the big one hits property value could skyrocket in California. Now they have now ocean front property side. If the big one hits and splits off a large chunk there could be 3 water front property sections.

Regardless of what the movies and stories of people who don't live here would have you believe, there is no way a piece of California could break off and fall into the ocean.

I'd much rather live in earthquake country than hurricane and/or tornado country. Even if we have the big one here, I may have a lot of shit laying broken on the floor, but I'll still have a roof over my head that wasn't blown off in 100+ MPH winds. My house is bolted to its foundation and the sub-floor in mounted on adjustable I-beams, so it would take an 8.5 + earthquake to knock it off.

Glad you and your family are doing okay. That's the most important. Other things can probably be replaced.

I was just making a joke about the falling off bit.  But yes the most important thing is that you are ok.

Pleased to read that you and your family are unscathed.

We've only had a couple of small ones, <5, here in recent years.

Though they caused some alarm and damage around the place,

no buildings came down as far as I know.  Other towns in the UK

feel the earth move occasionally but they are quite rare events here.

Glad you're place is just messyfied.

I live 5 miles from the epicenter of where the Loma Prieta happened.   I feel for you.

And California breaking off... HAHAHA

Everyone one knows when CA cracks up the San Andreas fault everything east of the the crack is going to just slide under the Alantic Ocean.

Glad you and your family are OK.

Napa is a very nice town with a lot of old buildings many have been renovated but many not and those building didn't do well in this quake.

My wife's brother lives in Napa and he said the pool in his back yard "sloshed out"  5 feet of water from the shaking, his hot tub slid off the deck and a bunch of stuff fell off the shelves in his house. Him and his wife and dog are OK but shook up a bit (ok ok bad joke but that's how her brother described it)

I lived in Southern Calif  my whole life and experienced several quakes and the smaller ones are not bad . . . .its kinda cool watching the ground roll and the trees wiggle but the problem is that you get no warning  and if your doing something (under a car on jack stands) it will scare the shit out of you.
