This one is of a storm we had a couple of days ago, strange occurence in the UK.powerful bursts every 1-2 seconds,no thunder and no rain, but very spectacular to watch.i only managed to get this with my phone camera.

This one i was playing around with some ND filters and trying some long exposure.

And another macro, just bought a 105mm 2.8 and i am starting to really enjoy using it.It is another world when you get up close to things you normally would'nt think about.

No processing thats as i saw it,It was the tail end of the storm which left clear sky  with a near full moon aswell so the amount of light was still good plus the lightning made it even brighter.

@@djMot   The quality of the image is quite poor if you look closely...pixelated and some banding, but it was taken with a Nokia N8.Not a bad little camera for a phone 12Mp with carl zeiss optics.

Here is one of the same storm taken by a friend with his Canon 7D :

I recently went backpacking and wanted to take some night-sky timelapse shots. Apparently I was still too near the city light pollution and the sky was too washed out to get good exposure time with the stars.

A friend recommended using ND filters. Anyone used them? Will they work for night-time stuff? My camera will only allow up to 30 second exposure times and I usually have to go that long to get the light I need.

Did you actually try a shot? Usually the camera can pick up stars even with city light wash within 30 seconds. If you take an exposure much longer than that the stars tend to blur because they're moving, or should I say we're moving.

Here are a couple I took a few years ago with my SLR resting on a fence post in my back yard in auto mode and allowing the timer to activate the shutter. As I recall it was about a 20 second exposure. I'm in the middle of town surrounded by street lights as you can see by the glowing orange trees, but it still managed to capture the stars and even a comet on the upper left side pretty well.

Same shot cropped to show the comet on the left and the pleiades on the right.

I need to try more night photography.  I'm just not sure my camera permits long enough exposures.

But here's one of the Moon I took last December.

I'm a huge fan of time lapse and have recently been using my go pro to make time lapse movies.

What I really want to capture is an afternoon - evening - night . . . .  showing the sun going down  and the stars coming out . . . and some clouds cruising through would be a bonus.

I will post a couple time lapse movies as soon as I get them edited.

@@djMot no mooning  in this forum . . . . . .post them in "turn the other cheek" . . . lol

One thing I'm learning is to keep your camera with you at all times because you never know when that perfect rainbow or amazing sunset will present itself to you and you will be standing there saying . . .WTF  I forgot the camera again :(

Here's one that was last January ..... The sundogs were cause by the very light snow being blown around. Taken with my iPhone 4s. I had taken another photo of the sundogs with my phone looking thru a pair of sunglasses.

Came across a few pictures I thought I would share from a few years ago. My wife and I rented a small farm house just a few miles from our home in town as a weekend getaway. We loved it so much that we lived there full time for a couple years and are sorry we're not still there. Lots of critters and beauty out there. About the only downside is no high speed internet.

The property around the house was leased by a local cattle ranch and dairy for grazing, so we had many neighbors greeting us in the morning.

My wife with her favorite holstein Cane (so named because my wife fed her candy canes). On a stormy night my wife heard a cow moaning out in a field in back of our house. It was pouring rain so she suited up and went out with a flashlight to investigate. This cow was giving birth and it was breech. I went out to see what what going on and my wife was up to her neck in blood and mud pulling the calf out of the mom. Both survived and my wife and the cow were inseparable after that. When the cow saw her it came running.

We put a Finch feeder out hoping to attract a few. It worked too well and they were emptying the feeder every other day.

View from the hill in back of our house. Our closest neighbor was about a mile away. This is spring when everything is green.

So jealous of that view! I would just sit out back every evening and smoke my pipe with a cool craft beer... sigh...

I've been trying to figure out what to do about housing here... rent is drying me up and houses here are astronomically priced. (you might be able to find a porta-john in an ally for around $75k)

I'm almost definitely going to get something as far out of town as I can find with an 1hr-1.5hr commute. Pleasanton looks like a good candidate.

Where is your job, San Jose or Mtn View?  I know what you mean about home prices out here, they are astronomical. Have you thought about looking south toward Gilroy or even Santa Cruz area?  I think the traffic into SJ from Pleasanton might kill you and I hear it's a little better coming from the south.

I've been thinking about selling my house and looking out in the boonies of the north bay. Prices are peaking up here right now, but it looks like either Google or Facebook is going to buy the old Fireman's Fund campus in Novato which means we'll have about 3,000 more wealthy techies moving up here which will drive the prices even higher over the next year.

I really like this one... reminds me of OH just south of Lake Erie where I spent first 10 years of my life.

Great pic, just need to crop off a bit from the bottom. ;)

These are high-res images and it wouldn't let me upload them cause they're too big... so you'll just have to click the links.

Which is why I'm looking for a house. lol.

Oh, and the same thing in SF is about $5000/m

You know, it's an hour and 45 minutes driving from where I live to SJ with no traffic. But you can take the ferry from Marin to SF then take BART to SJ.  Lots of people do it so they can live in the north bay.  Golden Gate transit also stops about 3 blocks from my house and they run from SJ to SF and up to here and beyond. Yes it's a pain in the ass, but the median price for a home in Sonoma county just jumped all the way up to $550,000. That's for an actual house, not a portable out house.

My gf's sister put an offer on a house... we went to go see it.

- Bad side of Palo Alto

- 1/8 acre maybe?

- windows busted out and boarded up

- landfill front "yard"

- all uneven wood floors and all buckling up by 6"

- some walls rotted out and drywall falling away

- 2 bedrooms

- cubicle bunk rooms setup in garage for renting out (lots to tear out)

- layout was very reminiscent of cheap military housing

- corner liquor store 200yards away

- ALL the cars parked on the street had anti-theft locks on the steering wheels (concerning much?)

- TOTAL SHIT HOLE

Listed at $450k with 29 offers. WHAT THE ROYAL WHOHUH?

To compare, this is the house my parents sold in VA not long ago... http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/2140-Flint-Hill-Rd-Powhatan-VA-23139/108013910_zpid/
