Beavis, check this link out, https://www.fleet.ford.com/resources/ford/general/pdf/towingguides/2002_All.pdf. What you'll discover on page 19 is a quick answer to your question. They stated maximum 5th trailer weight is 13,700 pounds! I'm sure the math is correct. I use to have 1999 version of what you have. Mine couldn't do it. You won't even have the luxury of bringing any belongings with you! Hopes this helps?

The truck "engine" will pull it just fine. The transmission is another story all together. I pulled a 30 ft 10,000 lb trailer with my gas powered 2005 Expedition that has the same engine as a gas F250, but after doing that for a summer the tranny went out.  I've heard from many people that Ford transmissions from the early to late 2000's frequently go out towing RV's.  If you try it, I would strongly suggest getting the tranny beefed up and serviced, and maybe adding an oil cooler to it.

By the way, my tranny cost over $5,000 to replace through Ford, and it wasn't really any cheaper to fix anywhere else. So I went with Ford to get the 3 year warranty on their work.

Beavis, to me, breaking down is the bigger issue when towing and anything else that can disrupt the trip, such as your state highway patrol.

yes  AUTO trans is the weak link   you didn't say what dif axle  Ratio ?   higher the better

yes add a big trans cooler  and  start out in lowest range  with OD off  (every time you stop ) once rolling place in drive,  at highway speed turn on overdrive

flush trans oil yearly if  pulling trailer daily

for weight  add leaf spring on rear axle for 14000

other is brakes use an electric brake controller for trailer, setup that trailer comes on first when pedal is applied

The 7.3 diesel is an animal but unfortunately the auto trans isn't.

Get the trans cooler or stay home and camp in your RV in your driveway.

Because your at the towing limit of that truck the brakes will be working hard to stop that rig and the 5th wheel has a braking system  . . .use it.

Its not a question of IF you WANT to spend the money on the brake controller you HAVE TO spend the money on that brake controller . . I mean come on if your watching your budget that closely you cant afford the trip.

Its important to consider the other families on the road enjoying their summer vacation.

You have a responsibility to make sure your rig is safe and set up properly.

ya the rv has a brake system and the truck does also. the truck just doesnt have the controller to adjust the brakes. and trans cooler? i know of them but not much about them. and never misunderstand. I always think of other before myself

Beavis if you can trade it for a Dodge of the same type. My GF's Dad regularly hauls heavy loads with his and has not had any problems with the tranny. He is a foreman for a huge constuction company in Jersey. Just my 2 cents and not trying to start a dodge vrs ford wars but I very much so trust the mans opinion.

A  Dodge truck with a Cummins Diesel engine is tough to beat. I'm Ford man and driven Fords all my life and still think the Ford F-series pickups are the best overall trucks but the Cummins diesel engine is tough as nails and gets good mileage.

If you could buy a new F-series pick-up with a Cummins diesel engine in it you might not ever need to buy another truck in your lifetime.

We all dream of things we cant have.
