Battle Royale Tournament

A competitive tournament idea for XI with elimination rounds and a final. No teams. FFA gametype with modifications. Is your competitive spirit and skill good enough to make it all the way through and win the prize? Can you work all alone without backup? Without bunny hopping? Or do you just want to run around with an SMR, lay claymores and drive little cars all day with nothing to show for it except the number of K/D on a scoreboard until is it erased and forgotten before the next map?

The gametype is as much about hunting and stalking your enemies, knowing your environments, and not relying on respawning/regenerating as it is about the usual point and shoot or spray. Not your typical TDM run&gun match in a small map. Only XI members or well-known non-members allowed. No ghosting or any other unfair advantages outside of established game rules.

Once all players are signed up the first round randomly pairs off all players into 1 vs 1 FFA matches. Both may be the same classes. They may not. However the admin picked maps will be chosen accordingly for balance so neither has an unfair advantage.

The victors of those matches face each other in the second round of 1 vs 1 FFA matches. The victors of those matches all go to a final round with winner take all. Example: 32 players sign up. Round 1 narrows the field to 16. Round 2 narrows the field to 8. Those 8 players meet in a single match to determine the winner.

The winner of the competition wins a free copy of BO3 or BF4 premium (online game code). Perhaps a $50 Steam/Origin credit. Depends on what the clan wants to work out. Maybe to make it interesting each contestant should contribute an extra $1 entry fee as a clan donation. The winner gets the pot.

Note: If the number of signed up competitors dont match the division setup (32/16/8) there will be wildcards (chosen at random) in an early round before round 1. They will be outfitted only with an MP5 (no attachments) and sidearm in a mid-sized map. The winners of these matches will be allowed to change their classes before round 1.

Basic Rules:

  • No respawn. Once dead you are out.

  • No spawn protection or disabled weapons at start.

  • No explosives except for frag grenades.

  • A single class + loadout is chosen before the tourney starts.

  • The chosen class + loadout remains for the entire tourney.

  • WEAPONS TBD. SOME STOCK SOME CUSTOM.

  • Loadouts are standard: 1 primary, 1 secondary, 1 frag, 1 tactical, multiple specialties.

  • Player speed/jump is normal with class weight modifiers in effect unless Lightweight is chosen.

  • All players start with 100 health points.

  • No health regen but multiple health packs will be given.

  • Headshots are always instakills regardless of health.

  • No dead-player weapon pickups.

  • Anti-bunnyhopping / Anti-dolphindiving in effect.

  • No killstreaks.

Maps:

Maps are chosen by admins before the matches with an eye towards balance for player skills and their loadouts. Players will know beforehand which maps they will be fighting on. For example, in a sniper vs specops match the map will be balanced for both. It would be unfair to ask a specops player to fight a sniper in a wide open map with no cover or hilly terrain. In a specops vs specops match the map will not be as large. Map sizes for 1 vs 1 will be that of the typical stock map but with some flexibility. The map for the final round will be much larger.

Final Match Rules:

On match start all players will spawn in protected and distant areas away from all other spawn points. Every 10-15 minutes (subject to change) a satellite scan will record all current player locations on the HUD. Markers remain on the HUD at that location and and a time-till-next scan timer is included. It would be best to move your position after the scan.

Markers are coded to player classes. Meaning, LMG marker icons are different from sniper icons. This is to help with knowing what kind of enemies players are going after and how to attack them or defend. Specops vs Specops wont have to worry as much about being sniped from afar unless there is third player nearby with that class, as shown by marker at previous locations. Keeping in mind that the longer the time since the last scan suggests how far away that player might have moved since.

Modifications:

Snipers have no-sway. This is due to an inherent bug in the sway system. For balance, snipers have damage modifications depending on stance. Kneeling players do normal damage. Standing players do %75 damage. Prone players do %125. (MIGHT TWEAK THIS) No acog. Silencers available (except for .50).

The P90 slightly rebalanced. Competitive mods consider the P90 overpowered and too accurate at long ranges for an SMG class weapon.

Opinions are welcome on how to maybe do things differently for the fun factor. But as a competitive mod they should not be the kinds of things that would turn the entire match into a 3-minute CQ R&G / Spray&Play fest. Nor a sniper/assault only game. An idea I had: The 1 vs 1 matches are the best 2 out of 3. Either a single map with up to three rounds or three different maps. If interested, post here and send Rugger&myself a PM so we can keep track of a signup sheet. The wildcards would work the same as the round 1 matches but classes are allowed to be changed before round 1 begins.

Thanks for reading and your consideration.

Edit to above. This will require a fairly significant new mod. If enough players commit to sign up and participate to the end, or until they die, I will make it up.

Sounds like fun...but seems like matches will not last very long based on these rules?

Since the intention of this kind of thing is much slower paced instead of throwing people into a pit and watching the carnage the match times could vary quite a bit. But could also just skip all the elimination round stuff, get 24 players, and go straight to the final round. Depends on how big of a map I can get. Hard to get something truly BF sized on cod4. In fact cod4 might be the wrong platform for this. Maybe BF2 would be better. But most people here dont have that and its a bitch to get working now anyways.

The rules as listed above were also meant as a method for players to choose the class/loadout they are truly best at and stick with it till the end. Could they win a tourney with the same weapon and equipment all the way through? This is only the initial idea and will require a lot of work to come up with a final version of something like it that people will play.

To visualize the intention. This has been done before so its not new.

24 players. All outfitted with what they want based on normal class loadouts. More or less. All 24 are dropped in remote locations on a really big island with various kids of terrain and structures. Using the above rules the last player standing wins. Its not the kind of thing that will be finished with a final winner in 30 minutes. Its mostly a matter of getting a map big enough. I suspect there isnt. Not in cod4. Would be an interesting map to build however.

That's a great idea!

We use this type of gameplay in DayZ however its never been one on one.

There is a huge town & associated area we play within (rely on our honesty) and we hunt each other down.

If anyone knows the game it usually centres around Cherno & Balotta to give you an idea of size.

I was thinking of another idea today that is team based and actually much simpler to implement. Wont require a new mod or map. Can also even take place over different gametypes.

The world itself is handled externally with all information on a webpage.  Most of the rules are basically the same but closer to standard TDM or objective matches. It is still just as competitive. Think of a board game like Axis and Allies. Meaning... this is war. A world has eight territories, each controlled by a team. Within each territory there are 10 zones, each with a unique map. There are no common maps between territories. For example, Team X may have Pipeline. Nobody else does. Some zones border the territory of your enemies. Your enemy, when its their turn, may choose to attack you to take that zone and add it to theirs. A team match is fought. The winner either retains controls or takes it away and adds it to theirs.

For team signups anybody can join. But once on a team that's it. The team is fixed and you cannot switch. Unless for some reason a player can no longer compete. If so, someone can join the team (who is not already on another team) and take his or her place. This is actually much easier to implement since there are no new mods or maps required. It is however different in that it is total war not hunting. Note that maps can vary. Some may be primarily CQ and small. Others primarily sniper. Maps can be restricted to a single gametype. Say if zone one in Team X's territory is always S&D. Another interesting idea might be many 'free' zones that nobody controls. Except by zombies. Want the zone? Win the match entirely. Very hard to do.

It would be cool if each team had at least 10 players. 8 teams. Meaning 80. But that might be unrealistic. I dont know how many people play here, either as regulars or casuals. However matches can be set whenever it is most convenient for both teams.

Sounds like Arma 3 or H1Z1 Battle Royale but with the really small CoD maps.Maps in CoD are very very small compared to Arma 3 or H1Z1 maps.

Battle Royale in both Arma 3 and H1Z1 have shrinking Poison gas clouds that slowly push the players into the center of the map. They also have 1v everyone and 2v everyone which is pretty darn cool.Doubt you could do small 2 man teams with like 10 teams in CoD.That would be really really cool if you could though.

Yup a lot has already been done. So the second idea was mostly one to get together dedicated teams in a competitive environment with certain rules that apply at all times but others that have flexibility. I am sure there are groups here that would love to get together and beat the shit out of other groups made up of players that piss them off sometimes.

edit: Forgot, it would have to be 'registered' with the appropriate head admins not actually playing in the tourney but different teams could enter into alliances. Buwhahaha.
