There was a rather interesting ending to that problem. I simply turned off my notifications and within a day I got a message pop up on my screen that they couldn't install those critical updates without me setting a time so I did and it worked. Since then I have noticed that several of the things that had quit working after I turned Cortana off has been working like a charm. Some of them had worked but would take forever to load to the screen that it felt like I had a major virus or something. These days it is running smooth and fast again!
