Hey All,

So I have a 1998 Ford Expedition 5.4L V8 Eddie Bauer Edition...

About a week ago, a horrid smell started coming out of the engine!  Smells like a dirty gym locker!!  Also, it sounds like I have a hole in the muffler.  I've been told that it's a clogged catalytic convert.  Another thing is that it could be mold/mildew that has grown inside the A/C Condensor.

Any ideas from all you idiots before I drop a shit ton of money?!

Thanks in advance!

Could be one of those. The air conditioner can get real funky. They make a can of spray to kill all the bacteria/mold. You can likely get that at UAP.

The converter on a 1998 if it hasn't been changed could be a likely suspect due to the noise.

If it's the A/C you can go to the store and buy an inexpensive douche kit. Pour it in the A/C vent and see if it makes a difference. Years a go my Aunt had an Olds, they were notorious for that. She took it into the shop and the mechanic told her to try that...and it worked. Although it's a temporary fix.

Track down @@ldoz, he's the resident mechanic. He might have an idea.

Well I had it looked at this morning....  come to find out I have a cracked passenger side exhaust manifold, manifold gasket is shot, bolt heads on manifold are gone, catalytic converter on that side has a hole in it...   First estimate was around $1,600!  Took it to another guy who's going to look at it tonight or tomorrow....  I'm flat broke right now, so this is not what I needed!!

Hey man, @@ldoz is a good guy to talk to. He's a mechanic. Might have some dollar saving ideas. You might also consider getting your parts from a salvage yard. It's saved me a ton of money in the past.

I've got a local guy looking at it to see if he can do the job cheaper and with some used parts.  He's done some work on it for me before and done a good job with some used parts, I won't find out until tomorrow what HIS cost will be

Thanks for the info all!

I'll keep you all updated on the progress

These parts can be found in a Junk yard pretty easy, as far as the cat any cheap muffler store should be able to replace it for around 100 dollars with a aftermarket one size fits all cat....

johnny

btw...I would go back to the first mechanic and kick him in the nuts for trying to cheat you

On top of everything else you have been told with the A/C you should also check to see if your vehicle has a cabin air filter. Most vehicles have them. If you have one it may be time to replace it.

So the funky smell your speaking about with that its most likely actually a bad heater core. They often will leak and if the seals on the box is good it will develop a mold which can go pretty rancid very quickly... Also as mentioned air cabin filter can be another cause.

Or if it smells like death, a mouse could have gotten inside one of the vents and died. This happened to me before Very Gross!!!

Did you buy your vehicle from Hexter? Could just be his jism in the vents, ala "There's Something About Mary," and his hair gel, remember?

Hmm? Don't expect Sweet Hexter to fess up, though.

Lol. Ayaq
