Okay all you pc geeks, I'm sure many of you have tried more graphic cards than I can research. I am running an old AMD HD5 5700 series card. Now this was a great card but unfortunately it just don't have enough power to drive anything new. Looking at the new battlefield 1 game.

I would like to get at minimum a R9 290 4gb, not sure I want a gtx so lets just stay with AMD. Fan cooled no water. Computer is a dell studio xps originally with win 7,(10 now) has a i7 2.8ghz processor.

I've seen the R9 370 much cheaper than the 290, but also see there were much more problems with the 370.  Trying to stay under 300, 250 be better. So to all you pc geeks what graphics card would you recommend.

pc express slot and I am not sure on the power connectors. I will have to shut down and look I know I seen at least the 4 pin hook up, didn't see a second. So If you need any more technical info I can probably get but I am a novice at best with hardware. I know how to swap out cards memory sticks and repair fans but a lot of the terms are greek to me.

Any help would be appreciated thanks

I agree with Go0fLo0p

Just change out your video card. Everything else should be good. We aren't going for ultra settings here. You should be able to run BF1 smoothly with just a video card upgrade.

Judging from your CPU speed I'm guessing you have the i7-860 or i7-930. Still a good CPU. You will be fine.

MSI bro. Massive bang for buck! I am not an AMD guy. But I know for sure MSI makes a rock solid unit with very good air cooling. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127874

save your money  for beating a dead horse with CPU locked into PCI-e 2.0v

new cards with PCI-e 3.0v  means need to update MB, RAM, CPU, and  PSU

Stay away from the R9 370.It's a decent card but in reality it's just a 7950 or 280X with 4 gig of memory instead of 3gb.

GTX 970 still smokes all of the 300 and 400 series cards in the $300-$400 price range including most of the R9 Fury in most benchmarks.Best bang for the Buck is get a GTX 970.wish I would of had the extra $40 when I got my R9 290X.The GTX 970 and 980 have ALOT faster rendering than most of the newer AMD/ATI cards under $400.

This is a smoking deal for someone if your willing to buy off of Ebay.Only 1 left to.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/EVGA-NVIDIA-Geforce-GTX-970-4GB-GDDR5-ACX-2-0-Graphics-Card-04G-P4-2972-KR-New-/252459178777?hash=item3ac7bd5b19:g:O4UAAOSwygJXhWBs

I'm kinda tired of having to buy a bigger power supply every time I upgrade my AMD cards.Seems like the newer they are the more power they want. The R9 290x and 390x are very very power hungry.Average of 342W under load.

Watch the Power requirements or you'll end up having to spend another $200-$300 for a good Single rail power supply.

960 nothing to sneeze at either and the prices are good. Also, if you watch a lot of BD's or plan to watch 4K in the future, it has hardware acceleration. 970/980 do not and rely on the cpu.

ugg thanks guys but unfortunately many of you are correct. my pc was bad ass 5 years ago with a pc E 2.0 express slot. I would love just to swap out the video card but I don't think it will do. ugg So many game I would rather play on PC. But I can buy them all and just play on ps4. Hell I bought new battlefront for pc. nope cant play GC not good enough. Just don't want to plop down 1400 for new rig either. 75% of my time on the pc is for business and ebay. It runs like a champ for that. Of course my daughter is graduating next year so she will need new laptop for college. Plus she requested a Disney cruise with everyone for her grad present. How can I refuse that since this will be the last kid moment of her life and she wants to be with us! Guess I will just wait till November. maybe someone will have good black Friday deal. Unless any one out there has a new rig laying around they would like to donate?????LOL

Thanks all for the info and time always helps to get the different insight because I will inevitably overlook something obvious.

A Disney cruise for a grad present? Always pricey. Then again, wait until its wedding time. Then the really big bills come in.

This is not correct. The fact is that no graphicscard use more than 8GB/s of bandwidth on the PCI-E (That's the maximum speed of PCI-E 2.0 x16). So you will still do fine with a PCI-E 2.0 motherboard and a R9-390. I would rather go with a GTX 1060 in your case but you have no need at all to upgrade motherboard and cpu yet.

960 is ok but your gona run into games that will need more and faster dedicated video memory.960 is only equipped with 2gb of 128bit gddr5 memory. If the memory speed was double or triple as fast it wouldn't be so bad.But it severely hurts performance especially when it comes to rendering.

that is why a 480 with 8 gig and 256 bit bus is the bang for the buck at $299

Nobody can give you a real answer without knowing...

How many monitors are you running

What size monitor(s)

What size is your power supply

Without knowing these basics its all opinions and not facts....

Just for fun...If you are running a single  21" monitor and a 500 watt power supply the GTX970 will work just fine...

siDARKde

@@siDARKde You are completely wrong. PCI-E 2.0 vs PCI-E 3.0 is on average only a 2 FPS difference.

The PCI Express 3.0 cards are backward compatible, will work fine on PCI Express 2.0/1.1 slots, with negligible performance difference. So no need to worry about that. Check this video:

You will need to upgrade your power supply if it is under 600W.

GTX 980 PCI Express 2.0 Vs PCI Express 3.0 Performance Benchmarks

57d1cea87b159_benchmarks3.jpg

57d1ceb17c1a1_benchmarks4.jpg

As you could see the performance of GTX 980 on PCI-E 2.0 X16 slot vs PCI-E 3.0 X16 is just 2 FPS or less. Highly negligible or even non-existent!

It has also been proven with the GTX 1080 and RX 480 on PCI-E 2.0 and 3.0 that there is no performance hit. You can get any GPU you want. You don't need a everything upgrade.

Keep it simple, GPU and PSU upgrades are needed for your system.

You will need to upgrade your power supply if it is under 600W.
