I have studied pretty much only amd set ups and i w as considering switching to Intel. now heres a few questions

Is it worth it ?

I5 or I7 ?

Whats the difference between lets say I5 4790 and I5 6600 ? (what do the extra numbers mean?)

Whats a good Mobo you recommend ($100-$130)

What all do i need to convert besides Mobo and Cpu ? (I have gtx 750 ti ftw gpu)

Will intel be a better choice in long run with games ?

Will I5 6600 be sufficient for a couple more years or should i scrimp and save for I7 ?

i5 6600. Best performance/money ratio. Dont bother with the k unless you are going to overclock.

However next gen intel processors will be out soon. Probably after christmas. So prices will likely drop.

so.... it is i5 or i7  must contain the letter K   can be overclocked

example  :6600K,  4790K , 3570K

Get a Z170A motherboard and an i5 6600k chip, and you'll be able to overclock comfortably (even if a few hundred mhz) and you'll enjoy a good CPU :)

Also, AMD temps tend to run a lot higher at load. My last chip was a phenom x4. It was a nice one for what I needed. But I had to be careful to watch them when doing intensive stuff like video compression. Cut down on the number of threads etc to keep it manageable. I dont think specs on that came out for their new chips.

I dont agree with the i3, if you running an i3 your CPU will go on its knees atleast in BF4 and BF1 games.

i5 6600. Best performance/money ratio. Dont bother with the k unless you are going to overclock.

However next gen intel processors will be out soon. Probably after christmas. So prices will likely drop.

I totally agree here, you should prob wait for Kaby Lake release then. The K processors are a little bit faster in stock clock even if you wont clock its faster then without K.

Although i should be looking at i7-6600(K) or i7-6700(K) because here you got the Hyperthreading that BF4 and Bf1 are using that will make ur BF run a bit smoother. :-)

(^^ just an example)

Maybe your are playing mindcraft then you dont need so much power... but what do i know... LOL

Motherboards: u dont need Z170 if you arent overclocking, you manage really good with an B150 or H170 motherboard. (a little cheaper then z170)

Best regards

I agree with Souriel ,an i3 barely runs BF1 with a mainstream gpu @ low settings .

I have compared my i3 4150 (my second rig) to my son's AMD FX6300 ,wich is much older and the FX6300 run's with an equal gpu @ medium settings much better then the i3 4150 .

For the newer games you need at least 4 core's .

This is the reason I avoid AMD CPU's.

Hmmm ... FX8350 @ 4.2 GHz under load 55 °C with a Noctua NH-D14 seems like to be fine ,My Intel i5 4690K @ 4.6 GHz does 68 °C with a Corsair H110gtx (see cpuz validate)

Guess it depends on a lot of factors. My i5 6600 (not overclocked) and also with an h110 hardly ever goes above 45C even under %100 load for extended periods. However I live in a coastal environment where its moderate temps most of the year so that likely has an effect.

My 4790k not over clocked never hit above 44c. I loved that about it.

I do not say that an i3 is a bad cpu but with games like BF1 it comes two cores to short .

In case of games like the older CoD's and BF3-4 it runs pretty good as long you aint using a high-end gpu ,then the i3 will bottleneck the gpu .

@ Hxtr,

While gaming my rig with the 4690k hits max 55c @ 4.6 GHz ,68c was measured while stressting the cpu for about 20 minutes .

Because you are overclocking.. that is to be expected. I can overclock but I never do. Puts too much stress on the CPU and other components.

68c is hot. Ouch!! Put an AMD sticker on your case.. they run that hot. lol jk

If you go to various places comparing chips you will see how overclocking makes temps jump really high really fast. Which is why they often have various methods of extreme cooling.

The way it has been in the past.. AMD are closer to their max clock speeds out of the box compared to Intel's. Intel has a larger buffer before reaching max clocking speed making them a better chip to overclock compared to AMD.

And just because I have have about the exact same system as @@Mule running a i4790k, Same case, same CPU and Same Cooling system...  does not mean either of our chips will do better than their other at overclocking. It is a chip by chip basis. Some are better quality than others.. just like a diamond. He might can push go 4.8mhz with stability and I might not get past 4.6mhz before I start experiencing problems.  This holds true for every CPU.

Yes i love a FX 8350 too ,i think my next build is gonna be AMD Zen .

The expectations of the Zen should be 8 core's and 16 treads for about 300 euros ,ofcourse that will be the introduction price .

Some of it would also depend on if you are wanting to spend the 300$ or so to get the i5 and mobo.  Your 8320 or amd u had could hold you a bit longer if you were saving up.  The 750ti would hold you back for gaming if you have some awesome CPU too (bottleneck).  The other thing to consider is, if your system is meeting your current needs with the games you play.  Food for thought.

Thanks taco yeah im just looking forward as a total over haul. Eventually i was the I5 6600k a decent mobo and the gtx 1060. all that should balance itself out so no bottlenecking and that way ill be good for some time.
