Ugh. international phone caller scams I think. Just got one at 1:30am. Its one of those late evenings for me so the ring didnt wake me up. But I dont remember ever getting a call that late before so it did raise concerns. Didnt pick it up and let it go to the answering machine.

Got one earlier in the day and picked it up by accident. Only recently got caller ID and didnt recognize it as an international call. But easily could tell it was a scammer call after I said 'hello' once and it was static on the line with 'hello hello hello' in an accented voice. So just hung up.

I assume picking up on such a call isnt going to be charged to me. Only if I placed one. And it seems from what I read Comcast wont allow me to block incoming international calls. Which sucks balls. When I made a quick phone call and explained the situation the csr (India) gave me the runaround about 'system upgrades'. Yea right.

Anyways, I suppose the only option for a landline is to pick up a phone blocker. Bookmarked a couple to check out tomorrow. But does anyone use one? How well does it work? In addition to blocking all international I may want to block all area codes except ones where I know people or if I know people will be on a vacation somewhere, for emergencies.

Things just get worse and worse for us all. One of the latest, the usual 'can you hear me' robocalls (they dont ask for you by name) want you to say 'yes' so they can record you. Then, when they charge you for something they will try and use that to 'prove' you agreed to something. So now, if its someone you dont know, dont ever say the word 'yes'. Sometimes the world is just too depressing because there isnt enough help from the powers that be for us to deal with it.

We don't have a landline any more so scammers aren't an issue.  I didn't actually mind getting the odd one to have fun with but 5 a night was too much.  I read recently that workers in Indian call centres hate ringing Australian numbers because of the amount of abuse and death threats they get.

Checked out nomorobo and might be worth it, considering its free. Still rings once however so for those middle of the night calls still have to keep the phone in a drawer or something. I've never gotten scammer calls in the middle of the night before so I dont know if that means ATT was better than comcast at filtering them out or if my phone number got out even tho I am paying for an unlisted phone number.

Going to try nomorobo. Sounds like it will do well however if I still get the single ring in the middle of the night I will have to keep it in a draw. Im a light sleeper. Not good for emergencies however. But its free so cant ask for perfection.

Have had NoMorobo for a few months - catches about 98% of the calls - unfortunately it still rings once - like you said not perfect but free - the numbers it doesn't catch are the new ones - there is a way to report them through their site - have reported a few myself - have had my own number show up on caller id plus numbers like 800-123-4567.

If NomoRobo can catch these numbers no reason why the phone companies can't block them at the switch - they don't want to be bothered

There is a new Scam going around. IP based phone lines with spoofed numbers that may show up as a local area code to you, A recorded voice, usually female, Start into into a sales pitch and stop and ask "Can You Hear Me?" If you say yes they got you. They already have your name address and phone#, possibly more personal info. What they do is charge things to you based on your verbal "Yes" authorization that they record. They even go so far as to send the debt to collections, all based off of that verbal yes. Unfortunately most states in the US lack any laws that make this illegal.   Let's be careful out there

I guess the only option now is to do cellphone only for people you want to contact. Everything else still use voip but with the phone off so it doesnt ring. Then let it all go to voicemail.  At the moment however my cell phone reception sucks at home with too many dropped calls. But even then I hear there are scammers. Hate to say it but I suppose its at the point where a blocker should allow only personally known numbers. Everything is either blocked or automatically goes to voice mail without ringing. Means missed calls that might be important but the only way to protect yourself. Seriously this is worse than making sure you are protected from STDs.

We have Panasonic phones (landline) that allows you to block numbers.  Works quite well.
