Reading all the peoples comments on gigs they've been to leads me to an awful confession, I never really enjoyed many and the quality of the music in most cases was poor.

Now let me explain, music is a very large part of my life, unlike most I kept my lp's (400+), and have about the same number of cd's played through an expensive sound system. Mainly rock, metal and electric blues ( I refuse to use the bloody fashionable word 'eclectic' oh f..k I did )

Some of the bands I have seen live (most before fame) are Jethro Tull (Houston and UK), Deep Purple (Montreal), Groundhogs (UK), Led Zeppelin, Free, Fleetwood Mac ( both versions), Saxon ( In a working mens club), and lots more including Ravi Shankar in Boston. Two years ago or so I went to see Killswitch Engage at a local university, boy did I get stared at, easily the oldest there.

Now I appreciate the occasion etc. but considering the price of the tickets etc it is an expensive business, I always wanted to see Neil Young and had an opportunity recently but they wanted £150 for the privilege, no thanks for that I could buy most of his music. It was a turning point for me, I realised that for me music was a one to one thing, not part of a sweaty steaming mass, so no more gigs, just me and my hi fi. Does anyone else feel like me?, or do you think live bands are better? I went to one festival on the insistence of a friend and was completely unimpressed by the so called supergroups. Conversely  I walked into a pub in Aberdeen and left 6 hours later after listening to the best electric blues guitar player I had ever heard, similar stories with folk music in Ireland.

I think that paying huge prices to watch a group, probably with binoculars, in a venue with crap acoustics is very overrated and I won't do it anymore, but everyone to their own.

Must have pressed this twice???

I had the privilege of growing up a few miles from a famous Rock venue in Passaic NJ- The Capital Theater

http://www.moyssi.com/capitolshows.htm

Also Madison Square Garden, Giants Stadium, The Beacon...tons of great venues but the Capital was walking distance for us 14 - 16 yr olds.. This thread has got me thinking about trying to compile a list....

You saw Led Zepplin...your list is complete!! I was a little young for them.

Keep this going and lets try to look back through the fog and list your favorite shows....my first concert ever (14 yrs old) was Giants Stadium...

Utopia, Poco, The Outlaws and (why I was there) Boston....the Boston set my son found on YouTube believe it or not....

Yeah, the ticket prices are freaking though the roof these days but here is a tip....

The old guys still rock and play....small venues...I go to Casinos and see some really great music these days....in the last year or so I have seen:

Peter Frampton, Chicago, Eddie Money, Jefferson Starship, Grand Funk Railroad.....the tickets either all are comp'd or $20.00 Them old guys still rock hard and appreciate us still rockin with em.

Well I find most bands live are not worth the price. Aerosmith was so drunk once they had a hard time standing up. Would of loved the eagles but again by the time I had a chance it was 400 a seat thats not going to happen. Then again I watched the Powder Blues Band at the Calgary airport and I was alone in the bar for most of there first set. And it was free so there you go. How can you guess if the band is going to be performing at there best.

Live to recorded music is always going to be different.  Venue also plays a big part as far as acoustics and quality of sound.  For me, I do enjoy live music however if the ticket price for me ain't right, I don't bother.  It's not a must for me to see live bands and as I don't do it all the time, I treat myself once in a while.

It's live so you get what you get as to performance and sound but at same time, shouldn't be judged by how they sound on LP or CD.

Agree with Labob if they are drunk or stoned and unable to play you should get a refund, happened twice to me. I would love to have seen Chicago Deerejohn, the group I really regret not seeing live were Rammstein especially as I have no hair to singe lol.

Best shows I have seen were and are always in the 1500 or less capacity crowd venues ....Now I did get taken to my first concert by my older brother and that was in 77 tour for the Presence Tour of Led Zeppelin which by the way is still my favorite album by them even if Jimmy mainly used a Strat for that album......I

Digress ....and hit the send key too early....Doh !! anyways the smaller clubs were the shows, for me that were the best....some of them as follows :

Metallica   Ride the lightning tour  Annies  Cincy ,Oh. ....paid I think $15

Pantera  Cowboys from Hell   and Annies and Bogarts with Wrathchild America  Guitar Ally  Metarie La.(New Orleans)    paid $ 20

Megadeth   Peace sells  Bogarts Cincy Oh. and back to back sold out shows for So far so good so what !! paid $20

I wanted to go see Metallica this Jan. in Cincy and I checked the prices ,for decent seats.....  $ 175 each  !!!   WTF !! Not !!

the shirts now are probably $50

If they fucking scaled back on the pyrotechnics and elaborate stage set ups and in so decreasing the crew maybe to bring the prices down, then maybe........I mean ,really what Normal Metallica fan ranging from 15 to 23 can afford those prices....

Completely agree Streetcleaner I too like the music not the show, were Megadeth good live?, I'll add Disturbed to the list I wish I'd seen. Trouble with prices is that now they are the norm with huge shows and huge stadiums to earn maximum bucks, the music is secondary and the crowds don't mind. By the way look out, recently here in the UK a deaf lady took a group to court, and won, because they had not provided a 'signer' (sign language) at the gig, world is barking mad.:(

Metallica in '89.... AC/DC in '89  AC/DC was great fun.  Titties & weed.  Ironically, you couldn't buy a beer at the venue, but you could stand there and get a contact buzz.  Think the tickets were like $25-$30?  Like you guys said, fuck those exorbitant prices these days.

I go to a SHIT LOAD of live gigs. 20 + a year normally. I love live music but I am very selective in what I like and where I see them. I like small venue shows, so I like little known bands, up and coming bands, I refuse to pay large money to see these big name bands (Only time I see them is when I win tickets on the radio, which is about 5-8 big shows a year)

I love Canadian rock, there are a ton of amazing Canadian bands that cost average of $25 to see. And even less in some cases. The younger up and coming bands try harder, put on better live shows, and dammit, I love the new music!

Take for instance this killer up and coming band from Australia.... The Lazys, heavy ACDC sound to them, very guitar riff oriented songs,  AMAZING live show. I will be seeing them in Toronto in a few weeks... $16... then in Waterloo a few weeks after that  I will see them again, $15.

Just bought tickets for my favorite band Monster Truck in May.... $35

The Glorious Sons in May, $28

I go to high energy band shows live

Keep it under 2000 people and I love it!

And they still put out kick ass rock videos lol!!

Lots of amazing live rock out there, screw the oldies, they done it, its nice to see as a nostalgic thing, but the price aint worth it with others putting out amazing shows at a fraction of the cost@

Yeah Rob, Megadeth was excellent ! in the first of two shows at Bogarts for So far...So what...   the sound went completely out during" The Conjuring " and Dave was looking at everyone in the band and they kept playing and him singing too ....seems like a minute and a half went by and the sound came back on and they didn't miss a beat....!!

and I also saw Disturbed there for their first album....another great show !!

Alice Cooper is one to see live.  What a show !!   And he has his own sound crew, so the sound is always on point.  The sound crew and board used is a deal breaker with me too.  Been to tons of shows where the sound guy (or girl) is, well shit and many where its sounds great.  A good sound guy can make any venue sound good.  Some just compress the hell out of everything then slap a limiter on it at say , negative 1db (digital now-a-days) and it sounds like shit !!  No dynamics at all !!  Sounds like Metallica's Death Magnetic !!  Squished and limited to hell !!!  Now dont slam me, I do have "Death Magnetic" on vinyl and its tolerable.
