Hello,

As many of you know, I love to use shotguns in video games. However, I do not know too much about them in real life. I would like to purchase a pump action shotgun for home defense and occasional target practice at a gun range. If anyone has advice for a good shotgun to buy, I'd greatly appreciate it. The reason I am interested in a pump action is because I heard they don't need to be calibrated, per ammo type, like an auto loading shotgun and have more versatility for what type of ammunition I load into it. Particularly, if I can shoot non-lethal bean bag rounds, that is what I'd like. I don't want to kill anybody, although of course I'd keep that type of ammo too. We had to down size and move into a more affordable home when my Dad died, and the area we live in now is not that great.

Thanks.

V/R,

RANDALL

I own a bunch of shotguns but my first and favorite and most versatile is my Remington 870 express. I bought it (OMG) 30yrs ago....

It came with 2 barrels (1 slug barrel and 1 Bird shot barrel) and a few different chokes. It never jammed in my recollection, can bang through the woods and mud/rain and still is very affordable. I deer hunt with the slug barrel (or just blow holes in shit) and Bird and skeet/trap shoot with the shot barrel. And don't let the skeet/trap shooters lead you on...with practice you can break both birds with a pump...

Mine is 12 ga.

So...its cheap, dependable, versatile, durable and easy as anything to use.

Get a Benelli SuperNova Tactical if you want a pump for home defense....although personally I have a Benelli M4....it's a bit more spendy though and it's a gas operated semi-auto.

all I can say is when you hear "shick ,shick!" you know it is my police issued Smith & Wesson 3000 with a short barrel to stand up in a squad car in the late 80's

A word of advice, forget the bean bag rounds. If you feel you need to use a gun it should be a lethal situation. Nobody wants to shoot someone, but no one wants to be beaten or killed by an intruder. Anyone that breaks into your home has already shown a disregard for you and your family's life.

I have only ever owned Mossberg 500, currently in the pistol grip config. Six shot with one in the chamber,...if you need more than one shot to down an intruder, you need more practice. Another aspect of choosing home defense items is the ammo. If you live in an apartment with neighbors close by, then birdshot is going to be the choice. If you are in a house on a lot and no neighbors or other family members to worry about, then slug or buckshot should be your choice. Happy hunting!

deerejon,

I also live in NJ. Are you familiar with the gun laws? Do I need some sort of permit?

Lots of good advice Randall.. You really need to think before buying a gun home defense... You need to understand your laws where you live and how they apply to home defence in your state... Also 20 gauge is all you need. With right choke and shells its plenty of gun for home use... Go to a good local dealer and try to shoot everything your looking at so you can get use to it...And remember one thing.. You don't pull a gun unless you are going to use it and understand the taking of a life... Also always make sure whats behind your target.... Good luck and please be safe....

I have the Mossberg 500, one of the few that has double extractors on the bolt as apposed to single one's that sometimes jam.

Mossberg 500 that I purchased new 37 years ago. Everything is in the gun safe. Illinois law is so draconian, if you did pull the trigger on an intruder, YOU would be in court for the rest of your life. I rely on a bag of baseballs & a Louisville slugger under the bed. Nobody is walking away from a beaning, then a finish swing w/a good piece of hickory.

Yes....in NJ all you need is a federal gun license for rifles and shotguns. For handguns you need individual permits, so if I was you I'd get the fed lic. and put in for 2 permits for handguns. You dont need to go out and get a handgun but I think they are good for 12 months so it wont hurt to apply for that too. Go to your local police station and get the forms. You will need to get finger printed and they used to (when I got mine) do it at the station but I get finger printed a lot for the various other licenses I have and its now  BIG business at a finger print center. Bullshit but....

Three things to remember when the cops show up:

1. "I was in fear for my life"

2. "I didn't know what else I could do, had no choice"

3. "I wanna talk to my lawyer"

When they ask why you shot him 6 times, you say "I couldn't find my reloads/spare magazine"

Almost forgot, I own more than one Mossberg Cruiser package with long barrel, short barrel, full stock and pistol grip. Nothing has been more affordable or dependable. Even have one in Nitex stainless for the boat.

So true. Admit to nothing but was concerned for my life... And answer to God and a judge..
