Might be over compensating. But but bigger can be better some time.. Just more dry work with that one...

Ya all need to move to some place a bit safer. I'd say Canada last time I had a burgler they knocked at the door. Kid ya not nice group of kids too. So I turned on the porch light and the mosquitoes chased them away . I did say sorry about that really I did.

my dads best friend  who was a preacher gave  him a remington 870 Wingmaster in 1983. we moved  in 2004 due to a fire and took the gun with us to rental house. we lost it there.  i kept asking the landlord if he ever came across it and in 2012 he called and said his  renter just found it. i picked it up took it to the smith had it cleaned up and re blued and gave it to him for his bday in 2012. sadly he never got to go hunting with it after that bc he grew ill. any  rem 870 you will be impressed with but if you spring for the  wingmaster you will have a piece of fine history to pass on down

The opinion of "experts" is that the "racking the slide" noise is not a deterrent to all burglars....most will understand the message and run away. For the more dangerous types, the noise gives your position away. But this is only from my reading. We don't don't have "castle doctrine" in Canada, so we can't consider a firearm as a self-defense option. My three pumps are for the range and blow things up....

I keep an 870 with an 18" barrel loaded with buckshot close by.  The AR isn't for use in the house.  That's for if you decide to shoot at my house from a distance.  Heh.

Shotgun in close quarters with a short barrel, presumed dark conditions... I am looking for two things in a home defense weapon - hopefully a deterrent (hearing a shotgun shell load when the person loading it is pointing it at you is a wake up call... at least it was for me when the cops did it), but primarily something I can move around in close quarters that won't go through the entire house and into the neighbors house.  Also something I don't need to carefully aim if the situation arises.

I have my paps old Vietnam-Era Ithaca Model 37 DS Police Special 12 gauge. 20" barrel and 8 round tube.  Trust me once they hear you rack a round they will run for the hills.

Used to hunt squirrel and rabbit and duck with it but I haven't used it in years but I keep it clean, loaded with buck shot and easily accessible. If anyone knows the old Ithaca model 37 knows that you can slam fire them just as fast as a semi auto. Hold the trigger and pump. I keep it handy because we regularly have large groups of "produce pickers" around here in the spring and fall.  I live really close to 2 fairly large apple orchards. Ridgetop and Boyer orchards.

Imho a 12 gauge Pump Action Riot Shotgun is the best choice with a short 16" barrel.

Mossberg or Remingtons make great examples...

Whats nice about shotguns are the different loads available.  The higher the number of the shot, or the pellets inside the shell, the smaller they are.  And you can reload the empty shells yourself, say with rock salt, if you dont want to kill someone , load the gun with a salt shell first, then a 6 or 8 shot for number 2 and say 00 for the 3rd round.  That 00 travels further, so you can hit em as they are running away

It depends on how much money you want to spend. I have a MOSSBERG 500 combo with both an 18.5 inch "defender" barrel with cylinder choke and a 28" bird barrel for a few years.

But I recently bought my fetish....Mossberg 590A1 mil-spec with heavy barrel, heavy mag tube (8+1 in the chamber), ghost ring sights, heatshield, 6 rounds ammo side saddle, collapsible stock (ATI Akita), bayonet lug (shit and giggles)....apparently the only shotty to pass the USMC 3000 rounds torture test....to me its a range toy/gun porn, as Canucks like me can't use a firearm as self-defense without most likely end up in court and deep caca....

BTW, the 590A1 milspec is HEAVY, so just go to the gun store to hold one...ultra sturdy, but more expensive and stuff....

I just ordered an adapter for a 1913 picatinny rail for a flashlight...I may get an Olight 1200 lumens light to put on that rail...although again, it would be for stuff and giggles...those real good lights are expensive too....

I prefer a Mossberg because of the tang safety. BUT, if you want a pistol grip, then the Mossberg tang safety end up being less convenient than the Remington's trigger guard mounted safety......and there is the rumor (can't confirm) that Remington has quality control issues nowadays...

When I want a good laugh I got on TAOFLEDERMAUS youtube channel...they trial all kinds of slugs...

My personal faves are IV8888 channel and Paul Harrell's channel...he is quite good at speaking without pretending, and speaks quite well/seriously about stuff....and he shoots at the meat target lol A good mention to Sootch 00,  Mrguns&gear,  hickok45 and military arms channel. Basically all Americans.

I'm born in the wrong country...

I happened to be in Idaho last July and I got my first look at those shotguns.
I thought as a ignorant and naïve Dutch noobie that after playing with shotguns on so many video games that I had grew used to them. But seeing the real one suddenly gave me the chills.

I never realized that they were that big. Not sure what kind of shotgun it was though but I even did not dare to come closer to one of them. XD

Hit them as they are running away????

What are you nuts Spinpuppy? If they are running away, they are no longer a threat. We all know from recent events that you just can't shoot someone as they are running away. No matter what they have done or how big of an asshole they are.

You don't want to go to jail because of some shitbag.

Hey buddy! I know you were just being funny.

From personal experience just the sound of racking a shell in to a pump shotgun will scare most intruders off because even a old lady can hit what she is pointing at. I had a fellow turning my locked door knob when I lived in Los Angeles and while my shotgun was a old model and had no shells is it when I stood on the inside of my front door and slid that pump action and said "get the fuck off my property or I will shoot you the moment that door opens" the fellow yelled sorry and ran off. I heard him jumping over my 4 foot high chain link fence. That sound is like no other to a intruder. Also buy the shortest barrel allowed in your state and a pistol grip, it makes it easy to move in your home and stick it around corners easier. Try walking through your home with a hunting shot gun, it is tough and gives you few firing angles compared to a shorter barreled weapon, but don't saw it down that can be big trouble if the law sees it after you shot someone. You were legal to defend yourself but you used a illegal weapon. Also make sure they are inside your home or armed, if they aren't put a cold weapon in their front waistband easily seen by all or drag them inside your house. Lethal force in most States is only allowed when facing immediate threat of injury or death of you or your family. can't shoot them as they run down your walkway or on your front lawn etc

If they are legal to own in your state, I suggest a Taurus Judge. Some states consider them a sawed off shotgun, so won't allow you to have one! But, you can shoot special .410 rounds that have lead disc's and backed with buckshot. Or you can shoot 45 Long Colt. Much more compact then any shottie, and you don't need to rack a round since it's a revolver!

No need for the apostrophe;  it incorrectly indicates possession when simple plural is intended.  Simple plurals don't ever use an apostrophe.  ❤️
