Hey @spinpuppy - Calling Mr. Home Depot...

My old Ariens snowblower is on its last legs.  What does Home Depot got these days that I might want to get as a replacement?  And is this a good time to buy, or are there better times of the year to buy one of these seasonal bad boys?

My current snowblower is a two-stage with a 5.5hp engine (I think it is) and an auger of about 21" - 24".  No attachments or lights or any fancy frills like that, not even an electric start.  Although that sure would be nice since a lot of snowblowing happens in the dark, and yanking that goddam pull starter gets old real quick!

Thanks for your expert assistance.

And, btw, the Toro Personal Pace lawnmower you recommended rocks!

Your severely limited with a 5hp blower. The little Craftsman 5/22 that I just sold has a 5hp engine on it and it does OK as long as you don't need to blow any snow over 8-10" deep. It really bogs down if it's wet snow.  A 5hp blower is Good for Suburban Sidewalks and small driveways.

I bought a used MTD built Cub Cadet 8hp 28" blower a couple of years ago and it's a whole different animal.  It doesn't care if I blow 1 foot or a 5 foot drift.

They no longer list the actual Horsepower. Your stuck with Torque or engine CCs.  Here is a CC to HP calculator. This is fairly accurate but may be slightly lower or higher depending on the cylinder bore, stroke and compression ratio of the engine. http://www3.telus.net/findNchoose/engine_cc_to_hp_calculator.html

272cc is between 8hp and 8.36hp

This is the best blower that Home Depot has for under $1000 28" and 8-8.36hp  https://www.homedepot.com/p/Cub-Cadet-28-in-272cc-Two-Stage-Electric-Start-Gas-Snow-Blower-with-Power-Steering-and-Steel-Chute-2X-28-HP/305948963

This one is just slightly over $1000 but 30" and approximately 11hp it's the best one that you can get for the money from Home Depot or Lowes. Both Big Box Stores carry these blowers.  https://www.homedepot.com/p/Cub-Cadet-30-in-357cc-Two-Stage-Electric-Start-Gas-Snow-Blower-with-Power-Steering-and-Steel-Chute-2X-30-HP/305948980

I would recommend one of the Ariens or Honda blowers but the decent ones with an 8hp or greater engine are $1399+ You can get Cub Cadet blower parts pretty much anywhere.

Toro your going to have to find a dealer or some place that sells aftermarket Chinese parts. Genuine Toro parts are expensive. A cogged drive wheel for your Toro Personal Pace mower will run you $37 each for an OEM wheel or $18-$22 for an aftermarket made in China replacement that you will be lucky to get 2 seasons out of.

Ariens blowers are very reliable but parts can be hard to find after a couple of years. Auger gear boxes are damned near impossible to find for any of the 2-4+year old Ariens blowers. Trust me I have an older Ariens with a torn up Auger box sitting up behind my shop.

I am a small engine mechanic.  I've been working on, repairing and rebuilding small engine junk since I was old enough to turn a wrench. If you want a good review of anything, just ask a mechanic that works on them.

Honda blowers are expensive and there parts are expensive but they are the most reliable blower that you can get IF you get there Mid to high end product.

Sorry I won't ever ask a dealer or a salesman about a product that they have absolutely no experience with.

If price is not a worry the last snow blower you’ll ever need is a Honda. We have snow! This is what you need if you have to deal with this! My driveway is over 200 feet. I have a 1987 Honda 5.5 hp I’ve done the whole driveway my 44 by 60 parking lot and behind my garage 36 by 30 for year. In 2008 I purchased a John Deere 155c ride on and a 46 inch snow blower attachment. If works great and blows snow great. The only thing is on a bit of a grade it gets stuck. I use the Honda now to dig the John Deere out. I’m talking serious snow!F23E125A-5A16-46C2-BEDA-575307C65E4D.thumb.jpeg.66651fa2851eaf8ff588af4d4598cc9a.jpeg

That's about what we end up with to @WeednFeed. Some places more, some places a little less. Just up the road It drifts horribly bad. 12ft+ drifts. Here at the house we normally get between 23-36 inches. The township uses an old snow cat to clear the drifts.

It's been around 15 years but we have had 4+ foot.   We get a bunch that blows down from lake Erie and from up out of the Baltimore/DC area that smacks us head on.  We're up the southern side of the tallest mountain range between Lake Erie and Baltimore Maryland, 20 minutes due east of Flight 93 crash site Memorial. She crashed rite above us near Indian Lake.

Don't want to hijack this thread but find it interesting, is blowing it the best method? you'll all have been doing this for years and may not have tried anything else, or other methods don't work perhaps?

The problems I see with snow are weight and volume, especially volume, as the larger the volume the longer it takes to melt. Weight you can do nothing about  but you could reduce the volume by melting it, yes it will refreeze but it will be a lot less volume and easier to break up and remove, I realise it won't run away like water, but can be broken up and removed, does no one use flamethrowers and jackhammers?

A blower will chop up the snow and scatter it out. With Plowing you need to have some place to put it that's out of the way.  Melting snow With a flame thrower? lmao  It would cost you an absolute fortune.

Snow will melt on the surface and immediately turn into ice. Warm or hot water flash freezes very very fast. Throw a pan of boiling water up in the air when the outside temps get below 32F or 0C and see what happens.

It's called the Mpemba effect.

Diesel Electric snow melters are the newest thing for dealing with lots of snow quickly in places that there are limited dump sites. But I read that they use approximately 40-65 gallon of Diesel fuel per hour to use and they can melt 30+ ton of snow per hour. They use a large diesel engine hooked to a large generator and a large heating element to melt the snow.

The throw yep if you get alot of snow the throw is a big thing. You want that machine to throw the snow as far into the yonder as possible because you will need the closer space later in the season for more yep snow. Remember if you have a lawyer neighbor give him the shovel because he can pile the shit real high :)

Thanks for all of your suggestions and humour.

Looks like Cub Cadet it is.

According to the Farmer's Almanac, the 2018-19 winter may have me wanting one of those Diesel Electric Snow Melting jobs.  I guess I''d need to win the lottery first just to pay for the fuel/electric, though.

@J3st3rXI - Here are pics of my aging and ailing Ariens.  It's a 20" with a 5HP Tecumseh, pull-start engine.  It starts hard.  Like I'm talking pull the damn starter a bazillion times, and then it might start.  I let the local high school shop class give it their best shot.  They lost the governor linkage for the carb, so I had to fashion one from a paperclip.  It now runs too lean and fast - when I can get it started, that is.  I think it could use new carb, but like you say, parts are apparently non existent after a few years, and this one was built back in the 80s.  The drive clutch could use adjustment as it feels like it's engaged all the time.  It's pretty hard to push as a result.  One of the tires (inflatable) has a slow leak, but just fast enough to where you need to pump it up before each use.

What do you think I should reasonably ask for it when I put it up for sale?  I need it out of here so I'll have space for a new one, so I want it to move quick.

Get whatever you think someone would pay for it. I've seen those old blowers selling for $75-$150 for parts or repair and up to $300. I seriously doubt the $300 ones ever sold.

I think this is the one that's been on our local Craigslist since last year. I was looking for one for auger parts for my old one and stumbled across it.   https://york.craigslist.org/for/d/ariens-snow-blower/6668860398.html

This one is supposed to run and work good. $175  https://york.craigslist.org/grd/d/ariens-snow-blowe-5hp/6682915432.html

I did actually find most of the parts for your model blower but I would treat yourself to a new one. Especially if what the farmers almanac says is coming. It's usually pretty accurate temperature wise but snow accumulation is hit and miss.

Technically you could fix it with 2 new belts and a new friction disk for the drive, a tube in the tire and I can get you part #s for a new governor linkage and carburetor Or throw a cheap $100 6.5hp harbor freight engine on and use it for a few more years.

I buy alot of hard to find parts off of this site.

Here is parts for your Ariens blower. No Engine parts available but I can get them.   https://www.jackssmallengines.com/jacks-parts-lookup/manufacturer/ariens/sno-thros-and-brushes/22-000-series-sno-thro/922008-008501-st524-5hp-tec-20-blower/snow-scoop-parts

@J3st3rXI - Hmmm.  Sounds like a donation to the high school machine shop might be the best option here.  I'll list it for $40 and see if it moves, but it sounds like I better not get my hopes up.  Not sure I would have room for a new one if I don't get rid of this one first.  Space is that tight in my garage.  I really need a shed, but that's another $2k or so.  Sadly, I'm not that rich.

THANK YOU for your help!

@J3st3rXI - I continue to move closer to making a purchase here, but ran into a little snag.  The Cub Cadet you recommended for just under $1k is a 28".  My Ariens is a 20".  That got me thinking about what width I have to play with in my 1-car garage.  28" ain't gonna fit.

24" I'm sure I'd be okay with.  Would your recommendation change if I dropped down to 24" or would this be a good purchase too?

Thanks for your thoughts.

I'm with Hogan  rebuild it  by school machine shop  if any bushings / bearings  need replacing.

for Gov  any Tecumseth dealer  will have  parts , look for the model # stamping  near the top of starter housing  ( HS.....) if can't  get part use stiff machanic wire to forum a new one, the paper clip is to thin and will chew the holes out  or clip will cut off and no control of speed an throw a rod out of crank case

as Jester  said new belts

Dj  I can see you can add a electric starter to this motor if  flywheel  has the starter teeth on outer edge of it

Tecumseh-HSSK40-HSSK50-Snowblower-Starter

Note: the holes in crank case to mount starter use a 1/4-20  tap to  thread holes and use 1/4-20 threaded  rod to make a stud,  get flat washers and 1/4-20 ny-loc nuts to hold starter or use 2 nuts and jam them

use blue thread locker to hold them in place  after  snug them in

this  operation  is needed for screws supplied will strip out  crank case over time  also use  5-20 motor oil in engine

clear1x1.gif oh forgot to say  to richen the fuel the very bottom of carb open needle screw a 1/8 turn  or  running motor under a load an  adjust till sounds correct , if leave running lean  will need a valve job , note hard starting is the start of it

I have the same starter kit for a 5hp Tecumseh but it does Not fit the older H50-H60 Tecumseh engines.  I have an H50 on my old rototiller and a spare H60 engine in my shed. Both are off of old snow blowers and both have the starter ring gear. The mount on the newer starters is different than the older ones. It won't bolt up.

Heck I'll sell ya my old Snapper blower cheap.  It's 24" with a 5hp Briggs engine. It does OK but you gota go really slow. Just not quite enough power to cut through drifts and that wet crap that the Plow trucks always push up into our short driveway.

I went to an auction the other day and ended up buying a 1998 Cub Cadet 1030 blower for $60.  10hp 30" cut.  Hasn't run in 10+ years but I got it running pretty good with a quick carburetor cleaning. Need to clean it a little better and replace the fuel line and all 3 belts but I think I got a heck of a deal.

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Cub-Cadet-24-in-208cc-2-Stage-Electric-Start-Gas-Snow-Blower-with-Power-Steering-2X-24/207161450?irgwc=1&cm_mmc=afl-ir-1241237-456723-

Not a bad looking blower. Do you have any Sears stores left?  We have 1 small Sears store left. The big ones in our local Malls all closed up.

This craftsman blower is the same MTD built blower Minus the headlight. Almost $200 cheaper. https://www.sears.com/craftsman-24-in-208cc-dual-stage-snow-thrower/p-07188173000P?plpSellerId=Sears&prdNo=1&blockNo=1&blockType=G1

The Cub Cadet stuff tends to be a Little better built. Look at the sides of the blower. The cub has several stiffening bends stamped into it. But they use the same transmission, Auger gear box and engine.  Don't know if there worth the extra almost $200 more than the Craftsman though. Both will be easy to buy parts for if you need belts or what not.

@J3st3rXI - (sorry, this board doesn't alert me to messages in this thread unless you @ me)  I'm a little worried about the Sears aspect, as I'm worried about their long term outlook at this point.

That said, you're right.  $200 for essentially the same guts is nothing to sneeze at.  The link you gave is for an online purchase only, and they are offering free delivery to my zip code.  What's even better is that they offer a $25 option to "haul away old item" which may just clinch that deal for me!

Thanks for the heads up on this deal!
