Im in Durham, NC.  I am far enough inland that the storm shouldn't be too bad as long as it weakens quickly after landfall, although they are saying it is going to slow down when it makes landfall.  Right now it is on the same track as Fran in 1996 and the same strength, and that tore us apart even 140 miles inland.

I'm in a small town Mocksville,  between Charlotte and Winston-Salem. I hope we don't get anything to bad. Hugo years ago really messed things up for weeks.

Just out of curiosity where do all the people go who evacuate? are there special shelters, just been reading about this one I hope it isn't as bad as predicted. Definitely I hope everyone and their properties are safe, the power these things have are frightening, better to overestimate than underestimate your needs, be safe my friends and good luck be with you all.

Hope you all stay safe. Hope to hell they breaks up fast.

We're damn near swimming in our back yard.  We definitely do NOT need any more rain.  The creek below the house flooded out really bad.  It's normally 10-15 foot wide and the creek is supposed to be down on the other side of the woods. It has to be a good 175-200 foot wide now.  That's from 48 hours of non stop rain on top of the allready water logged ground.

This weather is ridicules. We haven't had a rain free week since the end of July.

With severe storms like hurricanes and tornadoes, school gyms or community centers are typically used as shelters.  or people drive inland and find a hotel or stay with friends.

My wife and I were supposed to leave for the Outer Banks on Saturday morning for the week.

Guess not.....CURSES FLORENCE....CURSES!

We'll stay back home (in VA) and help staff the fire station cause it's going to get all kinda stupid (the people, not the storm) around here.......

Remember, TURN AROUND DON'T DROWN (not even sure why this had to be said.....)

Stay safe out there!

Wow, I had no idea so many folks here lived in NC too.  The storm is headed straight for Raleigh so, hmmm.  We received info from our community saying that last storm like that, FRAN, caused some folks to lose 2 weeks of power, etc. etc. etc.  WTF!@!!!!!!!!!  NO POWER!  I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT GAMING!!!   Oh, and be safe folks!  I like the advise = Turn Around, Don't Drown - if there is water on the road, don't try it, turn around. :scooter: For me personally, as it is all about Kayaking imho, I am kinda looking forward to a flooded Falls Lake so I can paddle around in the flooded woods. :rambo: I assume schools and such will be closed, so folks will probably hunker down like during Matthew a couple of years ago. :construction: OK off to run to the store and stock up on beer and wine.  :beerbig:

If this is a direct hit, it will be nothing like Matthew, which stayed in the water.  It is shaping up to be more like the wind damage of Fran in 1996 and the flooding damage of Floyd in 1999.  Given that it keeps raining every day this week, the flooding will be terrible since the ground will be overly saturated before Florence gets here.  Plus with Falls Lake and Jordan Lake are already over capacity, the dams will have to release a ton of water to protect the dams, causing more flooding.  We are definitely in for a fucked up time in NC.  :hope:

not a direct hit, it has turned to the south then inland, which is good for us... we still might lose power....
