Earlier this year I posted my granddaughter and I started to raise 6 laying hens. Well so far 3 have started laying. These hens are cross breeds and have the ability to lay different coloured eggs. The white egg in the picture is a store bought extra large for comparison. @AthenA might like this as she has hens for her family as well.

I used to raise chickens and probably will start here again.

We had Bard Rocks , Koshen Buffs  Rhode Island Reds( all 3 of these lay brown eggs)and my favorite Araucana's which are from Chile and look more like hawks than chickens, very cool markings and lay light blue eggs and are supposedly the  best for you, as far as nutrition, plus they are great when Easter arrives.....also I might add NO EGG  comes close to a fresh egg !!

Very nice Weed ! There's nothing like fresh eggs and now I can tell... I wonder what I'll do during Winter when they will lay eggs less often. I'm certainly going to miss it !

I only have brown eggs, but that's ok. One of my chicken sometimes lay eggs that are so HUGE and contain a double yellow lol I don't know what causes it, but I like it :)

Was your grandaughter happy and proud ?

mount a heater with a blower to the side of the coop and they will be fine and lay eggs the whole winter...you can also put a heat lamp inside the coop.    EGGS !!!

Love fresh eggs. I love double yolks too. My granddaughter is very egg-cited about finding the eggs. She loves to help crack them in the pan. Her little sister was born on September 4 and we all lover so much.

Here are 2 double yolk but my granddaughter broke one.

Hey, buddy, all you need is some ham to go with those green eggs.

"Weed 'n Feed, I am?"

Lol.

Nice pastels, just like the inventor of pasteurization, Louis Pastel.

I could install a lamp and all so they can still lay eggs everyday during Winter, but I won't. The chicken coop is winterized now, but I might let the "natural cycle" go on... I'll see and adjust ! At least I'm keeping them lol Apparently, they support cold better than when it's hot and I won't need to warm up the coop unless it gets below -10C ... which will happen often lol And I'll find a way to feed them appropriately as here, we spend almost 5 or 6 months with snow on the ground, and they love to eat the grass

That's so sweet ! I remember when my children were very young like her, they would've loved it too ! Now though, they see as a "task" (to go egg hunting lol), but they enjoy both the eggs and hens :)

....and I told you a electric heater/blower mounted to the wall with an outdoor extension cord then when it gets real cold just plug it in by the house/deck/door....where ever it is than unplug it when needed....you can even get a thermostat with some....just an idea.

They were sold as either a barn yard mix or Easter Eggers. The one with the hawk head has Brahma type feathers on the legs. One of the main roosters at the farm was an Easter Egger Brahma mix with the feathers on the legs and the ears and cheeks.  We are enjoying them all. I paid $10 per pullet with a guarantee to return roostersfor pullets. I returned 3 roosters that’s why I have different aged pullets.

@WeednFeed I shouldn't have said winterized, but "isolated". So we'll keep the hens, but just let the natural cycle go on (at least in the beginning). We just won't have 3 eggs a day like we did since May :)

@Streetcleaner There's a fan installed on the "ceiling" of the coop to get the humidity out. The rest is completely isolated and I ordered a thermo-timer (however this is called) to control the heating. Even their water will be warmed up (because we can't keep food or water inside the coop during Winter : humidity). I also bought a huge polythen sheet to cover the roof I will add to the coop, in the front, so they can go out and not freeze... and the snow won't get there either :)

Oh... and they will get some freshly cut grass once in a while during Winter too ! ... Yup, you can all laugh at the weed (grass) in my garage freezer
