There is always someone who will take hard drives off your hand, especially if they are still in working condition. It doesn't matter how old they are.

My brother was given all 500 computers from his work when they upgraded. He took them all apart and managed to get 350 working computers to give to families who could not afford them for their kids schooling.

Every times he would be given parts he would go and give those people an upgrade.

I always use a hammer, a 14lb one, then snip the actual disk with cutters, there are firms who still specialise in recovery of these, so to be absolutely certain incinerate the thing if any incriminating things on it, not that mine have mind you, but it's the surest way.

Rob has so much "incriminating stuff" on his hard drives that he:

  1. Uses a 6.5 kilogram sledge hammer to smash it, then;
  2. Uses heavy-duty shears to cut the disk to shreds, and finally;
  3. Sends the remnants to "Frank's Family-Friendly Crematorium" for the coup-de-grace (with an apostrophe above the second "e").

Geez, bud.

In a rare moment in history, I'm with Sweet @Angelz on this one:  what you got to hide?

Hmm?

Lol.

He He, actually mine are squeaky clean regarding you know what, but the state secrets I have need protecting, her majesty trusts me to be discrete. Who do you think they based a secret spy series on?? that is why I try to pass my tips onto you now dear Ayaq, my brave boy.

Between me and you deception is a hard thing to drop, I never burnt them, I used to freeze them, that is where the expression 'cold war' comes from. My freezer is packed with secrets from the Eastern Bloc, disguised as waffles, but don't tell anyone, my life could be at steak (get it?).

I became an idiot to eavesdrop on our many foreign players and have been building up a picture for our governments. It is apparent that not only are they better than us in game, but they can talk to us, but we can't talk to them, giving them an edge. So our governments are working on a new telepathy weapon for our troops, now I know what you're thinking (get it?), but lets keep it hush hush for now.

Anyway thats hard drives covered, next instalment is how to interrogate a cpu, keep going brave boy.

Plug the hard drive back in and right click on it then in the menu click on format. It will erase everything that is on it.

I skipped thru half the thread. If someone hasn't already suggested, ZERO write the hard disk. Your data is basically 0s and 1s and when you write all 0s in principle it becomes all blank. Then you can give it to anyone you want or an electronics store recycling program.

Seagate makes a disk utility. I googled and found this "http://hddguru.com/software/2006.04.13-HDD-Wipe-Tool/" you can try it.

You can always unplug your present hard drive and plug the one you want to erase in. But usually all pc's come with a 2nd pair of hard drive cables. Just look to see your present  drives cables and how they are plugged in then look to see if there is another matching set of cables and if there is just plug them in the same way. the boot up your pc and you should see a second drive when you click and open your computer icon. If it works you may even want to keep the second drive drive for storage.
