make sure the source is correct aka usb sound card hdmi etc etc etc

some mic and headsets have software / drivers to install to help them connect correctly in addition to the sound card drivers

Since its both send and receive, but voice only not SFX, it still sounds like a game problem. Maybe in the menus chose to set everything to default and go from there?

In game setting try switch to window default under chat setting- if works then go back to stereo or 5.1 or whatever floats your boat..... Good luck

Maybe, when more people are interested, I can write a Default Help Documentation regarding basic computer help and ask @Sitting-Ducto Pin this one down in Computer Help. I don't mind to add the database updated of knowledge.

Asking for help(in the XI forum as we are gamers and not all are Tech People) is a topic that people are giving at lot of suggestions and time into and we don't hear back of what the issues was. I rather have one clean sheet, "you" can share what PC it is, what is inside and the Operation system. What "you" have already tried and Googled to fix it.

Personally for you.Always check the drivers if your motherboard is not older than 2,5 years old.  Type in the brand and the type and also the Rev(ision) and grab that one first and see if Windows has a newer one or not (Windows drivers are always older because of the needed signature).

Report back and in a few days of not solving this issue by the help here, hit me up by PM and maybe I can Teamviewer you for a bit. And have an 4GB USB stick ready and we will have fun.

I have Just upgraded almost my whole system,  MB is a MSI Z390 pro gaming carbon, processor is Intel i7 8700, 48 gigs RAM, sound card is Creative labs soundblaster Z, I have tried all and every suggestion on here and then some. I can hear the game fine, footsteps, shots, deathjs..ect...just cannot hear anyone talk or anyone can hear me. When i press Z, i see the chat speaker, but no one can hear me. I have tested my mike in the soundblaster set up and can hear it fine, in COD when i go to sound settings, I can see the chat bar move when i talk...I am at a loss...just reformatted my whole system again..will let you know if that fixes it

I see two options:

1. Try to find older/newer or equal drivers for the Creative.

2. Pull out that sound card and see if your Onboard outputs are working. And or switch out USB ports if all looks good in your Device Manager.

In game, I assume you have watched that Video clip I have posted? Z390 Pro Gaming, it must be a Windows 10 version.

Good luck!

If it's a driver issue. You can try uninstalling the driver. Restart the computer. And the computer will auto install the proper driver.

Your into computers though. Im sure you tired all the driver recommend stuff before posting.

Do you have no sound at all, or is it just through the head phones?  Is there system sounds before entering a game?

In the Sound Blaster Z control panel under Mixer Settings click the input device button and pick rear mic, make sure it's not on rear line in.

Very good one. I remember that in the past there was a selection. Even on old ones.

As it boasts fantastic onboard audio for this motherboard, and you have added a sound card , presume you have switched off onboard sound in bios ?? Looking at specs for this board I think the spend on sound card was wasted, but hey ho. Strongly suspect they are conflicting, try taking out sound card and drivers and trying only on board sound with drivers for motherboard. Also make sure your connectors are in correct holes as you now have two choices, if using sound card presume it has it's own?

ps reformatting should be the very last resort, I have built many computers over the last thirty years and although problems like this are frustrating they are usually fixable without reformatting which is a pain in the arse. Calm down, go away and think about it, and above all note down on paper what changes you have made to resolve it. This is so you can go back to base and start again trying a different fix, if you don't you end up altering everything and don't know what you have done. Then go back to basics, just like an engine, in your case what sound things do you have, onboard, separate card, speakers, headset and how does your operating system blend these all together? Work in steps in a logical manner, above all write the changes down, especially in the bios. Worked for me every time, you'll get there. I have a separate sound card with it's own software, every time I switch on I have to configure in this software before I hear in game, despite hearing windows start up music.

Update :- presume you've tried these from manufacturer ?  https://support.creative.com/kb/welcome.aspx

especially the general audio troubleshooting, I think you have the same as me, the manufacturers software is overriding windows and needs setting up, perhaps every time?

If you decide to try your onboard audio (Realtek 1220p), make sure you install the Nahimic 3 software. This is what gives you 7.1 surround sound effect and directional audio for games. Together with the audio boost 4 this should prove to  be just as good as the SBZ
