I watched the documentary on Leo Houlding a few weeks back. He got some balls!! 3000ft climb.

Two men have free climbed the Dawn Wall of Yosemite's El Capitan rock formation, a feat no-one has ever managed before. The 3,000-foot (914m) sheer granite face is one of the most difficult climbs in the world and frighteningly smooth. How did they hold on?

"The holds are quite literally matchsticks on a vertical face," says Leo Houlding, a professional climber who has climbed El Capitan by a different route.

"Your main point of contact when you are climbing is the tips of your fingers and obviously hanging on to tiny little holds with all your bodyweight, and all the power you can create, starts to shred your fingertips," Houlding says.

"And after a week you have very little skin left."

Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson, the two climbers who completed their epic climb on Wednesday, had been on the wall since 27 December - two-and-a-half weeks.

If he falls off does he spawn on that ledge or have to start at the bottom again ??

Yes, they may have free climbed it, meaning they only used ropes to protect from falls;  but this man, he free soloed El Capitan, which means he used no ropes.  The first and only to do this, as far as I know.

Tommy Caldwell actually helped Alex Honnold prepare for the free solo climb; He was so concerned for his friend's safety that he couldn't be there to watch.

Wasnt it not too long ago that a climber fell off El Capitan and plunged to his death? Pretty risky stuff if you ask me. Then again, I suppose so is skydiving or deep sea diving. Or crossing the street without looking.

Mind that bus!

What bus?

Splat!

An award winning National Geographic documentary was made of this amazing feat of courage, hard-won developed absolute technical skill, a career of planning, years of study & practice, physical strength, focus, perseverence, endurance & so many other qualities developed over a career culminating in this accomplishment, that each aspect could be studied for their development and integration into a whole skill set.  Every discipline he displayed therein had to be executed perfectly to achieve this, & he did.   Schools have created curricula around aspects of his personal achievement & the work involved in it's accomplishment.   Or, knowing nothing about it, you could take 20 seconds to dismiss it out of hand and call him an idiot.

No rope? You can train forever but you still cant get past unforeseen events or other random and uncontrollable things. I assume everyone here that drives... no matter how good of a driver you are... wears a seatbelt.
