So for my career, I lead a team of auto damage adjuster and for the most part, I love my job and my team is one of the best in the state of Florida. With that being said, I get a lot of request for adjusters who are sucking at their job to come to my team to help them turn their numbers around. Recently, I let this one adjuster come to my team and I told her from the beginning that I am going to have to re-train her since she has a lot of bad habits and I will not tolerate those type of habits on my team. I have noticed that if her day doesn't go a 100% as planned, she gets very frustrated and starts to shut down and make mistakes. I talked to her about it this morning and I told her that in our career, our day will never go as planned and that she needed to adjust to what is being thrown at her by these customers and body shops. What does she do next, she shuts down on me just because I tried to have a conversation with her about this!!!

Easy fix !!!    Say these few words !!   "Your Fired" !!!!   Some people, especially the younger ones 20's to early 30's, shut down when confronted about their weaknesses.  Well hell, they hate anything that rubs them the wrong way.  And thats about everything in life !!!   Remember your team is as strong as your "weakest link".  Let-em go !!!!

I have managed groups as small as 2 and as big as 20.. You really just need to know what makes her tic... Share with her what makes your day crazy... When they shut down just let them know at the end of  the day her day wasn't  as good as it could have been because she let her self down... Her day can only be as good as she makes it...I always try to lead by example, If something needs to be done , Do it . If a attitude needs to be changed, Show by leading with yours... Time will tell. Something that was said earlier that I am getting tired of hearing is the young generation and their hurt feelings and such.. True this generation is not as tough as yours or mine.. But we need to take  some responsibility for it..We as a whole made this world for this generation.. I have learned with younger ones under me they truly want to learn ,But people wont take the time to explain in such a way they can wrap their heads around it.. I had a young guy few years back was awful about trying to finish what i was going to say trying to impress me, Then I would have to start over or say it again cause he never would remember what I wanted from him,.. Finally I told him to keep mouth shut and ears open and he would be surprised how much more he retained.. That day changed his approach .. Great young man now... I think  by now I know you well enough to know your a patient man ,So you'll do fine.. Good luck..  Now Go back to work slut.. Tired of hearing whine like a beeeeechh

Good God (falling over) I absolutely agree with Angu5, older people have a natural assumption that they know more and are better, not so, you do get assholes everywhere in life, but anyone who is in charge of other people needs to realise that the major part of their job is to listen and explain. They should also remember that everyone has a bad day, and not everyone can grasp things immediately, that said if they consistently wilfully refuse to work correctly they must go, no doubt.

Strangely I found the higher educated ones to be the real arseholes, they would join with a (example) Phd in divinity, knowing nothing about the industry they had joined, they would then milk the old timers dry for their knowledge, then once they thought they knew something would strut around giving the same old timers instructions, this led to the old timers clamming up and saying nothing to everyone new, creating a vicious circle. The things I noticed over the years were the decreasing laughs at work,  political correctness, an explosion of non productive skills that seemed to need constant empire building, safety, hr, quality assurance and environmental matters. Once proud Company's with pioneering spirit lost to bullshit and accountants, who now rule the roost, the majority of employees in major corporations know little or nothing about their industry and have not progressed through it.

Older and more experienced workers should not consider younger people to be a threat to their jobs, they should take into account they are nervous, unsure and still finding their way, they have to be encouraged, however if their attitude is completely wrong they need to be corrected, and that is getting very difficult to do.

It's my view that it is an employee's responsibility to have an attitude conducive to the success of their assigned task(s).  It's not the employer's job to help them feel better about the job and have a better attitude.  That goes from washing dishes, to stacking bourbon barrels, to landscaping, roofing, nursing, delivering pizzas... anything.  If a person is immature, impatient, lazy, unmotivated, introverted, unfocused... whatever the issue may be, the onus is upon them to improve.  Especially if they're unwilling to take help and advice, then they should be fired.

@Timmah! I agree with you and I don't. I agree that people are always their own person. You wake up and you decide how you want your day to be. If you're gonna be happy....sad....bitter it's all about you. Same goes with your work. However,  I think if you are working as a team or with a team you should build eachother up. Bosses, supervisors ect. I don't mean you have to baby people because that's not going to help. If you have a bad manager, boss, supervisor then employees aren't going to succeed. No one wants to come to a workplace that they despise. If you have a good leader and one that you can rely on for to guide you correctly then bam. You have employees who want to make you happy and want to thrive. And I know theres also a point where if you have to keep repeating yourself then unfortunately....ya you are going to have to say okay enough is enough. I also think Angus nailed some of it on the head too. There are so many grey areas sometimes in being a manager and being an employee. I also think this generation lacks the "I need to work" attitude, and some of us don't put up with that.
