You do not need more than 16gb of memory for anything unless you are into Video Production and you render high quality video with something like Adobe Premiere. Adobe Premiere will use darn near every MB of memory that you can squeeze into it.

The best way to add speed to your PC is to upgrade your memory speed from 1600 to 1866 if your motherboard supports it. And to swap out your old HDD to an SSD.

And a you will see a HUGE increase in performance from swapping out a mechanical HDD to a cheap $30-$40 240gb SSD or a $50-$60 480gb SSD.  I have 1 Intel 520 series 240gb SSD and 1 Intel 545s series 256gb SSD. Bought them both off of ebay. 1 was $38 and the other was $45. 240gb has the OS and a couple games on it and the other SSD has COD4 on it and a bunch of Midget porn. I constantly load into COD4 probably 80% faster than anyone else does. It does pretty damn good for being a slightly older DDR3 based PC.

If you have 16gb and you are getting out of memory errors? You probably have a Virus. A virus will eat up all available memory or make it inaccessible to other programs. Or your HDD is going bad or it's to full and it can no longer Cache files to the free space on your HDD.

You can also check Ebay; they sometimes have good deals on ram.

Just remember if you are having compatibility issues and a memtest report doesn't show anything means that more than likely your motherboard BIOS needs to be updated. This might not be an issue with DDR3 MOBOS anymore but that was my problem with my DDR4 motherboard. I also have to disagree with @J3st3r on not needing 32GB of ram it would benefit you immensely as I also have 32GB. You may not think your system is bottle-necking your PC with 16 but you would be surprised that your system still uses paged memory even with 12GB of RAM free. When I went from 16 to 32 my frames jumped by at-least 15. Also if you are having speed issues invest in a SSD for your OS your frames will jump 15%+ minimum and your computer as a whole will double its speed along with very short boot times.

If you are going to add more its a good idea to get the same ram you already have, if you pull out one of the sticks you should see number on the side match that up and you should be fine, rule of thumb never mix ram modules.

I'm upgrading my DDR 3 RAM so I will soon have four spare 4gb RAM sticks available (Ripclaw DDR 3 1600).

Before buying any, be sure about compatibility with more than two sticks on a particular ram model. You can have two kits (8x2 each kit) exactly the same, down to the exact same model number, but that is not a guarantee that the motherboard will recognize all four. That little lesson cost be some bucks.
