Yup, got the popup that says win7 support ending in a couple weeks. Ah well. Good while it lasted. While not the best in longevity 10 years is pretty good for an OS. For something that lasts 10 years with free support/updates it was a good investment for any software. 2009, dont even remember what I was doing then. Going to have to read up further how to disable all those added 'user friendly' things that take away control. Also all the various privacy settings.

If you're moving to 10 soon, there are many privacy settings, some of which however can not simply be turned off.  For other windows stuff such as telemetry (not sure what this all is or encompasses), check out:

https://www.safer-networking.org/products/spybot-anti-beacon/

I've also made a manual registry edit and disabled automatic updates.  It's still limited in nature such that when you check for updates and there are more than one available, you can not pick and choose which ones to install.  It's all or nothing.

Been on 10 since it came out and have not had any problems as others have experienced.  Probably their porn that caused the issue lol.

Hang on for a bit.  Twice now I've lost my build to windows updates on ten and the last one cost me.

I guess if I went that route, which I may have to in order to get DX12, then daily full backups will be a must. Or at the very least, assuming auto WU can be completely shut off, to always backup first anytime any update is done. Even a small one.

I aint touching that windows 10 again , had it on a 240gb new SSD and I got a blue screen randomly and it then wouldnt boot. Turned out that windows 10 actually ended up wiping the whole SSD. Luckly it was on a new SSD with a fresh copy of W10 on it but still imagine if it was a 1 or 2 TB drive with important files on it and the same happened

I just renewed my Zonealarm subscription for the year anyway regardless of the non windows updates or not

Windows 10 enterprise is the version I would reccommend for people though if they dont want the constant windows updates. You can disable them and alot more of their telemetry data collections

I upgraded another of my PC's about a month ago and still worked then.  Check this out if you want, pretty straight forward.

Windows 10 Upgrade

*** Now, this is an upgrade, repeat, upgrade, which means it overwrites your current OS and does not (should not) affect your personal files.  I have done this successfully now on 4 machines and have not had any issues on any machine.  My machine I use for my gaming and all personal use has been running 10 since it first came out.

DISCLAIMER: The above is of my personal experience only and in no way take any responsibility if you move forward and it does not work our for you.

Sorry, had to say that as many people have claimed problems with windows 10.

NOTE: If you do move forward, back up all personal files as a precaution.  Installed applications can always be re-installed.

I may do the free upgrade... after I back up the entire drive in case the worst happens. I just dont like the supposedly user friendly win10 interface. This user is old school I guess.

I just upgraded the 5 pc's at my office out of necessity.....tax software for this season isn't going to run on Windows 7.  So far, so good.......not sure about updates and all of that yet, so any advice is appreciated.

Windows 10 has a habit of removing drivers and replacing with their version...They have got me 3 times so far (video and sound) got me - Device manager/device/right click/properties and record current drivers and make sure they are from the device maker rather then windows/microsoft....

If you ever have a issue after a update you can also click the event tab and it will give you a time line and you can "roll back" the drivers but I just downloaded and installed fresh...They have also trashed some older programs I used and I was forced to use different programs....As always back up on a portable because there has been some that lost personal data....

As @Barron3000 said he lost everything and I would suspect because there was no partition to protect it but I have heard of just plain personal folder going missing

Yes, I do recall reading an article about the loss of personal folders after an update that reside under the root drives user data.  I personally don't use those folders on the root or OS drive but either move the location or create my own on a separate partition or disk if you have multiple physical drives (which may be a reason I did not personally get affected).  This keeps your personal files away from the OS just in case.

I do not think my crashes were hardware related. I run some odd ball programs like mouse without borders. A bunch of modding tools ect and To me I think its those type of programs that cause the bad updates.  WIndows 10 aside from that works fine for me.

I wonder if after an upgrade you can reinstall the original win7 to a virtual disk and have both. Or is the upgrade considered the same original license. There are likely older program that dont work on win10.

The upgrade uses your existing win7 license.  For older programs, try running them in compatibility mode for win7.

Ironically last 2/3 days my windows 7 was acting up , eventually packed in last night. Whole OS just got corrupt in the end, spent all New Years night backing up all my files and stuff.

Was having boot issues all night also , woke up at 4am randomly and said to myself i'll tackle this fucker again and suddendly it worked.  Eventually installed fresh copy W10 Enterprise edition on a small SSD . Have the telemetry and stuff all disabled also the future updates (all up to date currently).

I'll keep you's updated haha , hopefully I dont go through another bad experience with W10

I'm going to keep using 7 until at least a year after it ends, whats the difference between that and 10 with the updates turned off which you all seem to do?

Windows 10 standard and Pro have no option to disable windows updates (some of them, not all have destroyed people's pc's)

Enterprise edition has the option to disable all of it and run windows they way it should realistically be run.

If your ever stuck or need a windows give me a shout , I have literally all versions of Windows going back to Windows 98 haha

Ran into more problems than Win7 in the end , I had all the W10 updates up to date , motherboard drivers too. I just disabled the future updates and Cortana.  I was having major issues, long story

Went back with a fresh copy of W7 and its all back to good

For people saying its a component issues or so my build is below:

CPU: AMD FX-8350

GPU: Radeon R9 290x

RAM: 12GB DDR3

Ran into the same sort of issues with W10 Pro (different version) with Intel i5-3470s and a R9 270x

My step mother used w3.1 up till 5 years ago LOL She now has w7. I told her never to put w10 in any thing she owns that runs windows.

I am looking forward to w7 support being gone. I have never ever trusted microsoft since day 1. The arrogance of that company trying to spy on the entire world.

When they forced w10 on all pc's that cost them a few million in lawsuits (not enough to put a dent in their bank account).  The latest lawsuit on microsoft is the one that I am hoping hurts them the most. It is going to be in the billions.

I am just thankful I had windows auto update turned off.  I was so grateful when someone posted the update number that we could delete so that update to w10 would not happen. All the businesses they lost to linux because of w10 made me laugh. The corporate copy of w10 still can not be trusted is why most businesses went to linux.

There is nothing on God's green earth that will make me install w10 in my pc.

W7 4 EVER!!!
