Influenza

From the gruesome flu pandemic that killed an estimated 50 million to 100 million people in 1918, to the 2009 swine flu pandemic that took thousands of lives, different strains of influenza viruses have caused some of the deadliest outbreaks of the past century. This group of pathogens is one of the most closely watched due to its enormous pandemic threat.

In its seasonal epidemics, the virus infects up to 15 percent of the population it hits. Annual epidemics are thought to result in between 3 million and 5 million cases of severe illness and between 250,000 and 500,000 deaths every year around the world, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The ever-changing virus has gone through several major mutations in the past century and has been able to repeatedly spread to humans via domestic animals. Significant outbreaks caused by the virus include the Asian flu in 1957 and the Hong Kong flu in 1968, which each caused several million deaths worldwide, and the swine flu in 2009.

That is a bull shit. It is not a death sentence. The reason why it spread in in China so fast is that there are 2 billion people crammed into their cities. The level of healthcare sucks and the sanitation sucks. Don't get me wrong I am saddened when anyone dies. But to freak out the public over something like this is careless and reckless. I have been all over the world and have seen things that are far more worse that the corona. Corona will come and go. We have seen the Asian flu, swine flu, SARS. But to say 15 million people will die is bull shit.

Lol...okay buddy, I'm sure your world travels have made you so much wiser than the academics at Australian National University are. My guess is that you didn't even bother to read the paper. Here is the link again if you are interested in opening your mind to possibly learning something. Sorry, but it's a little more work than reading something written by Dr, Oz

Thanks Tron. Good information.

Some are quick to dismiss this but I believe we're in a world of hurt. There is NO stopping an epidemic like this. There's no containing it. Most of the world is going to get sick and there are two things about that that really frighten me: that it could evolve faster than vaccines and that apparently, you can be reinfected. If these prove true, many of us are going to die.

Yes, flu has killed far more people because so many more people that coronavirus get flu. But that's going to change. And, coronavirus is far, far more deadlier.

While only one tenth of a percent of flu victims die, coronavirus is 34 times more deadly, killing 3.4 percent of victims. And the older you are, the far deadlier it is.

Flu kills only .8 percent of victims over age 65. With coronavirus, If you're under 50 about 1.3 percent of victims die. But if you're 50-59 that more than doubles to 3.6 percent. It doubles again over age 70 to 8 percent and if you're over 80, 15 percent of victims die.

Other factors also increase your risk of death from coronavirus. For instance, when coronavirus attacks, the body's immune system is completely overwhelmed. If your immune system is compromised as mine is you're at greater risk. Ground zero is the lungs and many patients develop pneumonia in both. Because I smoked for 50 years and have restrictive lung disease I'm at much greater risk. And, it leads to kidney failure. I have only about 30 percent of kidney function as is. If I get coronavirus, I'm toast. But I don't see how to prevent that unless I move to Antartica.

We'll see what happens. Wish all of you the best. Things are going to get very bad in every country as it spreads.

Here is another article everyone should read, which gives first hand accounts from the medical professionals working in Wuhan China. https://www.wsj.com/articles/if-we-fail-what-happens-to-you-all-one-doctors-life-on-the-coronavirus-front-lines-11583344415

For the record @Sixgun Wuhan is sometimes called "the Chicago of China" and is one of the most affluent and modern cities in China, including 300+ research institutes and investments from 230 of the Fortune 500 firms.

You might be surprised that the kids in 'bubbles' are actually fairing a lot better compared to older people who get the virus.
They're just gonna die of measles instead, but that's a whole other debate. ?

So I see here a lot of young whipper snapper, nothing can hurt me comments.  Well, my friends, at 66 (in very good health) I am still not fully convinced that we are in dire straits.  I do however listen to and weigh each post for its worth. Being smart means being prepared for the unexpected.  Yeah, it may never get to you, but what if does?  Are you prepared to take the necessary precautions?  At what time do you concede you need to be more aware of the situation and take action? I think its like Rugger said, sitting in front of this PC playing games all day will keep you safe.  But, we have to eat, DRINK, and perform other tasks that take us out into the public.  Just be smart.

Tron thanks for the input.  I was very skeptical at first, however, a good friend of mine is an RN working with infectious diseases at the University of Virginia.  She is pretty much on board with much of what TRON says. Don't get caught with your pants down folks!

Just over 3,400 deaths so far in total. People driving and blabbing on there Cell phones cause over 6,000 deaths annually. But I wouldn't take any chances if you don't have to. Something this widespread is going to eventually spread further unless they find a way to eradicate it.

China must be 1 disgustingly filthy place for it to spread so widely, so quickly. They say it's spread from Mucus and Saliva transfer to the eyes, mouth and ears.

It's more the fact that they have such a massive population and they're all crammed together. Population density is a good disease spreader.
Think London Underground during rush hour then multiply it by at least 10.

Did you read the Wall St. Journal article I posted earlier detailing how the actual doctors on the front lines in China were fairing?

Since you seem to think this is all just a big hoax, maybe you should book a cruise to Asia right now. I hear there are some awesome deals available.

I was thinking about it, looks like a good deal.  Of course there are a couple of deaths in Florida now....https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8085329/Coronavirus-kills-two-Florida-residents-East-Coast-deaths-attributed-outbreak.html

I would encourage everyone to read through this Twitter feed. She basically summarizes every concern that I have in a thoughtful and concise manner based on actual data.
