So this kind of thing has happened before and it will happen again. Last few times we took it very seriously and took the appropriate measures but didn't have mass panic over them. Neither by the population nor the leaders.

I keep hearing about X number of people infected, and how many dead, but next to nothing about how many have already recovered completely.  It's been around 2-3 months. Since there is a 'death rate' there should be a number somewhere. Assuming the rate is %5, and a round number of 5k dead, does that mean the other 95k are all recovered?

Oh and stores are now severely limited to what they can order for restock due to mass shortages. And now that the multipacks of water are gone, saw yesterday that they are going after the 12-pack boxes of soda. Panic buying again today. One customer gave me an attitude because she had to wait in the long lines. No shit lady... not that I said that to her. ?

Convid-19 is very similar to SARS in that both are Coronaviruses. SARS had a higher mortality rate but didn’t have the “fitness to persist in the human population,” which eventually led to its demise. Also SARS had symptoms that were severe and therefore easier to identify and contain.

What makes Convid-19 so unique and potentially deadly is that so many people had mild symptoms or are asymptomatic and therefore don’t see a doctor and are largely unaccounted for. The rate of spread can potentially be a lot more higher.

N1H1 as Sparty mentioned had a reasonably large rate of spread, though the mortality rate was marginally higher than the regular flu. The reasoning was it effected the population more under age of 60. One third of the population over 60 already had antigens to combat this flu, and with a younger and stronger patient-base the mortality rate remained low.

I have heard the term "senior killer" with this virus and the stats seem to prove this unfortunately. The early mortality rate for anyone over age 70 is around 10 percent.

In the end, all these pandemics are unique in that they effect the population differently. Yes, in hind site some seem minor but eventually we will have one similar to the 1918 Spanish Flu. My thoughts are do what you can to minimize the effect.

Fuckers are stockpiling everything, and now the stores will be empty for the next few weeks. Actually, I kinda like that, I will be able to shop without the queues at the register.

Wow, this is really turning into a panic, not a pandemic, thank you scientists, doctors and politicians for completely fucking up everyones lives. Reality check, we have so far had 35 deaths in UK, our food shops are stripped bare with queues waiting for them to open. You cannot buy medicines, freezers, fridges, bread makers etc all gone in a frenzy of panic. The irony is that those most affected, the frail and elderly are the ones unable to get the things they need. Mankind is showing his true colours. It is going to get worse but the death toll so far is nothing to write home about, there is no hope at all for humanity, we are still basic animals. A great demonstration of just how powerful the media is.

We need a stupid douchebag virus to thin out the herd;  all these selfish, panicky, inconsiderate fucks buying months worth of shit on lizard-brained, fear-based impulse that won't even do shit to help survive the flu part 2... just inconvenience their fellow urban denizens.  Should be a temporary law that allows one to kick someone's arse if you catch them rollin' around with a shopping cart full of shit paper or other unnecessary purchasable item.

Lets have a reality check. 650k people die... in the US alone... from heart disease every single year. Slightly less for cancer. So people die, in massive quantities. Unless it is someone you know, or it is some kind of tragedy, It is a fact we are all used to and accept as natural without blinking an eye. Death has little meaning. Yet this time, with somewhere around 100 dead in the US, we are all fucked. Many books are going to be written about the mass panic of 2020 and why it happened compared to SARS, the avian flu, and others.

Here is how stupid it is. Usually, if there is something wrong with you and someone steps in to help then you think 'thank you' and you're going to get better. Most people are optimistic by nature. But this time people are seeing any help as a sign that things are getting 'worse'.

Yes, but you quite naturally believe this, having started this conversation you are right in some aspects, but oh so wrong in others. I have just done the maths and for the total confirmed cases versus deaths I got 3.89 %, 97% of those deaths were people over 70 who were ill anyway.

Having sown the seeds of panic, for what is the loss of a small percentage of humans the economies of the world have probably been set back for at least five years. The panic is widespread many industries will close and a world recession will surely follow. This will result in much hardship, possibly conflict and probably starvation, instead of keeping quiet and dealing with the people who may actually die. The 'experts' can hold their heads up as they of course were correct, but the consequences (we are yet to see) are far in excess of pride. There is a thing called commonsense, and that sadly has deserted humans this century.  The medical profession may not accept people dying, but if their dying is the price to pay for normality then we should pay it. Mark my words the end results of this will be wars, the classic way of taking  attention away from problems. I respect you but I do not follow your ethos, we all have differing views.

The various financial bodies of the world are trying to somehow stem the tide of economic collapse. However every time they do something the reaction is that they must know something the rest of us dont and that we are closer to the end. Like there is some sort of Illuminati conspiracy. I hate to say it, but perhaps we would have been better off if they did exactly nothing at all and said 'Remain calm, all is well." Of course there are the eventual conspiracy theories. The latest is that this was all intentional by certain people in the US sending the virus to China. Since a lot of us are dumb as bricks a percentage will buy it.

Long term might be interesting to see attitudes about people that get sick. If you are, should you be forced to stay home from work for a short while at least until the worst has past? Since we need to pay the bills we load up on flu medicine so we dont feel like shit and go. However if we as a people want to change it to where staying home is a requirement, by the employer or the state, then we must deal with their financial issues. Once upon a time it was called paid sick leave. These days, you are lucky to get it at all. Of course the rebuttal to that is always that its too expensive and people will be laid off. Well, choose one. If you think its too expensive, then accept that either you may get sick from those that came to work or if you are the one that is sick you might infect others. On the other hand, if you chose to require sick people to stay home then you must help them until they are no longer infected themselves.

~40,000 - ~60,000 people die every year from the flu.  No panic.  Most of these people that have died due to Corona would have died had they caught the seasonal flu.

~40,000 people die every year in auto accidents in the U.S.  Better shut down those roadways.

Your list did not include the 40k that die per year from gun violence in the US. Men, women and children. 110 per day. You can have serious health problems or never caught a cold in your life. Since two weeks ago that is 1,500 people.

Get rid of guns to save all these people? Require guns to be quarantined and never be taken outside of your home? Nope. Seems while we should be able to force families to remain in their homes at all times when just one of them is sick we cant do that with guns for *ANY* reason whatsoever. That 40k are simply the price we pay. Well, whatever. Its an old and tiresome argument nobody will ever win and most people are tired of debating anyway. Back to my videogames for me.

But this time? The price of 100 dead is much too high, we must declare state and national emergencies, and shut down the entire country. Oh and we must panic and hide in fear every time some gang banger gets shot up in Detroit. Better go stock up on bandaids in case we get shot too. Oh and bottled water in case our tap water gets contaminated or shut off. In which case we will all stink of BO in a matter of days and some might die from the smell. ?
