Unfortunately in some cases this is true, but we have many many cases of abusing our care system and have started clamping down, everyone in the UK knows someone abusing it, my ex brother in law hasn't worked for 25 years. Nothing wrong with him, he lives in his own 4 bedroom house, Drives a large 4x4 and has 4 holidays a year all paid for by the state, gets away with it by being a good actor and lying. Other poor people genuinely in need cannot get assistance, any UK citizen will confirm this.

No only saw this trailer, movies like this depress me because some of it is true, but given up thinking the world is fair, although Budman has cheered me up today by donating many deaths to my final scores, thanks Budman.

We do have an amazing NHS but the process that. the government put you through to claim your sick pay is sometimes unfair, but as Rob said it's down to people abusing the system and they are trying to weed them out. Most of the people who do these assessments do no not work for the NHS

We do pay for it of course as our taxes are very high, roughly you lose about 60% of your wages for the average earner, we pay a graduated income tax plus national insurance, then everything you buy is taxed after that. The NHS was formed to give basic healthcare to the population, however as science has progressed people now expect every treatment available to be free. So no government dares to interfere as it is political dynamite, consequently it is underfunded and has a hopeless management system. The managers, who are generally non medical, earn vast salaries compared to the medical staff. The medical staff leave to work abroad where they can earn much more and there is a constant struggle for staff,  The system staggers along, but is not nearly as advanced and efficient as that in other modern countries. That said the British people are extremely fond of the NHS and it still serves the population well.

The entire British welfare system has been abused for so long and by so many that it is near breaking point. I believe it is systematically abused by both born and bred British and many of our drop in and live friends from all over the world.

With the correct information and a few medical letters and a bit of acting many can lead a reasonable life without ever having put in a fkin penny towards the state. This is where the system has failed and whatever steps are then imposed only seems to make things worse for the people who sincerely need help.

The people who abuse it still carry on and abuse it.

These sad times that we are now going through are highlighting the years of mismanagement and underfunding of the NHS and the inept and slow reaction by the goverment and its advisers.

I just hope that once this is all over that the UK's fragile economy will actually survive and still allow us to have the NHS and social care that is needed in this once great country.

@TheHammer although our systems are fairly good we have some massive drawbacks to them, our welfare system actually encourages people not to work and in many cases you earn far more than people who go to work. This results in entire generations of families who have never, and will never work, and do you blame them when by working you get a lot less money and probably lose all your benefits, it also gives them time to earn even more by 'fiddle jobs'. You may find this incredible in these times of lockdown, but we are just about to fly in plane loads of Eastern Europeans to pick our crops, while our own people sit at home and watch tv on benefits.

The thing I always find the most amazing is that these people complain the most about everything, you often hear them saying things like what are 'they' doing about it, they being the state who look after them from cradle to grave. It has gone far beyond being a fall back in times of trouble and become a way of life for many, I think last time I saw the figures we have two and a half million people who have never worked (although a lot will be genuine) and six and a half million immigrants working with an unemployment figure of yes you've guessed it two and a half million. You get the benefits as soon as you enter the country without a need to pay into the 'pot', which is crazy.

The ones who seem to lose out the most are like in the film, they have worked most of their lives then fallen on hard times, they fall outside of a lot of benefits and are left in limbo. Yet despite this we have many homeless, many poor etc etc just like any other country, sad.

So in UK you can be born, live and die and have to a degree no monetary, housing or medical worries your entire life, bet that sounds weird to those in the USA?

Actually  Rob , we have the same identical problems you described here in the states. Don't  want to get into it , but everything you described is going on here. Its a shame for the people who genuinely need the assistance.

Done some quick number crunching as best I can, and for the average type of wage it appears you pay twice as much for medical services in the USA than we do in the UK, so yes it is expensive. I presume that there will be monetary limits on treatments too, which will make it worse. Not hard to see why all our doctors head out there ?

I didn't realise you had a system outside of insurance type cover, what does that cover, do they specify treatments?

medicare is for retirees, 65 and older. single payer government issued.  Wife pays $135 month for what is called part b, c and d.  Covers EVERYTHING including prescriptions, eye care , dental, rides to doct appointments, unlimited hospital stays and a bunch more.

Oh well that's not too bad if you're over 65

Its called medicaid. Was supposed to help the lower income and disabled people who couldn't work , Have other programs which pay rent heat electricity etc.  They were made with well intentions but you know what happened when everyone jumped on the bandwagon.

Medicare is free, and covers just about everything. Don't  quote me on this  because i'm not on medicaid never was. I was one of the people that had to go to work everyday and watch people on assistance programs buying out the grocery stores with full shopping carts , while we had to pinch pennies because we had bills to pay. Retired now so that is good. Kids have good jobs and are self sufficient , so everything is right in my world except the coronas virus.

According to eHealth, the average of an individual health insurance plan is $440 for an individual and $1,168 for a family in the USA.
