Thank you for all the advice everyone. I’ve decided to replace the hard drive. I’m just not ready to give up that much money as my bank account hasn’t been this black in a long time. My son has a copy of windows 10 that I can use. Now I just have to figure out which hard drive to buy. I do play other games besides call of duty, but I haven’t been able to in a long time because of my computer issues.

Any advice on which hard drive to buy?

This might sound funny Janey but if you have an old computer it needs to be compatible, @J3st3r will give you some tips I'm sure, I will too if you want, the connectors are the bits we need to know, in fact some will have old hard drives lying around for sure, wipe the porn and send to Janey boys.

Leave the porn on it... LOL. I think I found a hard drive that I’m going to purchase. Now the only issue I have is getting an operating system on it. I have access to a windows 10 key, but I don’t have the install disc.

Janey

what type of HDD ?  IDE, SATA, and M2

Note have you tried the freezer test and not compressed old drive at all

first does new HDD supported with your bios

meaning size  not a 1 terabyte  drive?

and is bigger then old HDD

if  yes  then have new HDD clone software ready on a USB stick

install new HDD on next available port,  boot with zip baggy still  covering it ….. if boots then  use your new HDD clone software on USB stick to format new drive and clone old drive .

good luck

have everything ready  by open case and install old to same wires and install  new drive on next port have wires ready to hook up when take out cold  HDD to computer

@Janey If you have access to a computer, Download that and select create installation media. You can either burn it to DVD or use a 8gb or larger thumb drive. Thumb drive is the easiest.

It takes me about 15 minutes to download and create a bootable USB drive. Pretty simple to do if you follow the instructions. You can put Windows 10 on any computer as long as you have a Windows 7, windows 8, windows 8.1 or windows 10 product key. It will activate automatically as soon as it connects to the internet the 1st time.

If it doesn't automatically activate there are ways around that as well. I won't go into the specifics here. Lets just say that they have questionable legality. lol

I dunno if you bought something already, but if the PC powers on, makes a clicking noise form the disk and then powers down again, the problem quite likely isn't JUST the hard drive. That would simply put you on a default screen of the motherboard, where it shows things like the amount of RAM, the type of processor, the versions of things, and a warning about you needing to select a viable boot medium.

Power button sounds more reasonable than the hard disk being pooped from the description, honestly...

It's likely better economics to have someone with basic IT skills look over the machine and determine what's really broke. Worst case scenario, if the power supply and video card are newish, buying the bits and putting them together for a PC that just has to play COD4 and COD5 should be on the nice side of $500 even with current hardware prices. mainboard, cpu and ram

Can you get into the BIOS / UEFI config screen? Usually when you turn it on it flashes a message saying press (your key here) to get into UEFI or "configuration" or BIOS or "boot-up options" or similar. If you can open the configuration that way you can see if it is able to find the disk, and you can turn off the "quick boot" so it doesn't just flash past any useful warnings. If you can't even get this far, the problem is far morelikely to be mainboard or power supply and buying a new hard drive just throws good money out the window.

Janey that's a 5400rpm drive you are looking at.  5400=SLOW.  I think that you would be happier getting a 1TB SSD for $10 more.

This sounds like a bad Power Supply not power button, if you can try to take off the main side panel where you see the front of the motherboard and turn on the computer. Note if any lights are on and fans spinning then reply back please this will tell us a lot about the issue.
