How to get started again

Recommended Posts

It has been so long I cannot even figure out how to get this game to run again... Crazy the game is this old now.

If I try to run multiplayer from steam it says "unable to initialize punkbuster". I've tried reinstalling and I've tried to download the iw3mp.exe file from the sticky on this forum and I still get the same error if I try to run multiplayer cod4

I'm not sure what else to try now. Someone give me a hint or some shit so I can get back on these servers and make some people cry.

Thank you

Thanks for responding.

SgT. Chris I think I tried that route which amounted to putting the iw3mp.exe file in the steam directory for cod4 -- did not work.

YACCster -- I'm not sure what you mean or how to do that. When you reinstall from steam it does not give you any options like that (to not install punkbuster). I can delete the folder PB under Call of Duty 4 but that does not work either.

BUDMAN - That got me past the Steam issues.  Now I get a "Server is a different version 1.7" when I try toi connect to one of the COD4 IPs.

replace your iw3mp.exe with the old 1.7 version you downloaded

That did it - thanks everyone for the help.

Just to close the loop on this: the sticky on the forum tells you to copy that iw3mp.exe file (that is in a link) to your Call of Duty 4 directory. If you reinstall or use Steams 'Check Integrity', you must copy it again. I was trying to many things at the same time.

Thanks again

Glad it's working!  On one of the many posts it suggests making the iw3mp.exe read only which has solved the update issue for me.
